"Lion dog" owner ordered to keep Charles leashed

NORFOLK The owner of the famous "lion dog" pleaded guilty Friday to maintaining a nuisance animal and was ordered to keep Charles the Monarch on a leash. In exchange for Daniel Painter's plea to the misdemeanor, Deputy City Attorney Cynthia Hall dropped charges of failing to pay a dog license tax and failure to vaccinate for rabies.

No plan yet for Portsmouth's feral cats

PORTSMOUTH The city has yet to come up with a plan for dealing with its feral cat population. And unless it does so soon, cats in Portsmouth are going to start dying as it gets colder, one animal welfare expert warned.

The contest was held earlier this month but will be shown on WAVY-TV starting at noon. Honor, a 4-year-old male, is entered in the nonsporting group. The winner in each group moves into contention for Best in Show.

In wake of laws against tethering dogs, few fines

In the two months after Suffolk banned dog-tethering Sept. 1, police did not write a single summons for that violation. "Tethering" is chaining an animal to a stationary object to keep it from running free. Animal-advocacy groups say dogs suffer from extended periods of tethering and can become aggressive or anxious.
