Swimming advisory lifted in Va. Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH  The city’s Public Health Department has lifted a swimming and wading advisory for the Chesapeake Bay between Wake Forest and Kendall streets.  The advisory was issued Wednesday because of high bacteria levels in the water. It included the First Landing State Park coastline but did not affect the Oceanfront.

Bicyclist killed at Oceanfront was Canadian tourist

VIRGINIA BEACH A Canadian tourist was struck by a vehicle and killed Monday morning as he bicycled at the Oceanfront. Pierre Foget, 65, of Quebec, was visiting Virginia Beach with his wife, said Officer James Cason Jr., a police spokesman. The couple was heading west in the 1200 block of Shore Drive when Foget veered out of the paved bike lane and into the road, Cason said.

Developer requests deferral on SkyWheel project

VIRGINIA BEACH The developer of SkyWheel Virginia Beach has requested an indefinite deferral of its application for a permit. Koch Development Co. of Missouri hoped to open the nearly 200-foot Ferris wheel at 17th Street by next spring, but now wants time to address issues raised at an April Planning Commission hearing.

Virginia Zoo in Norfolk adding two young orangutans

NORFOLK The Virginia Zoo is doubling its orangutan population. Solaris, a 10-year-old orangutan, was expected to arrive from the Houston Zoo around 9 p.m. Thursday, according to a news release from the Virginia Zoo. He will be joining Dara, a 14-year-old orangutan from the Seneca Park Zoo in Rochester, N.Y. She arrived in Norfolk a week ago.
