Beach center to host hoops tournaments

A lot more ballers will be coming to Virginia Beach soon. For the next three years, the Virginia Beach Convention Center has agreed to host youth basketball tournaments put on by the Junior Sports Association, the city announced in a news release this week. The first tourney - the 2014 JSA Central East Coast Showdown - will take place April 18-20.

Carnival Splendor to sail from Norfolk next year

Carnival Cruise Lines will make a big splash when it returns to Norfolk next spring.
The Carnival Splendor, the largest Carnival ship ever to sail from the city, will embark on a half-dozen cruises from the city's Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center, including a seven-day Bermuda voyage in October, the Miami-based cruise line announced on Thursday.

200-foot-tall SkyWheel may come to Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH This one's big. Nearly 200-feet-above-the-beach big. SkyWheel, a Ferris wheel that would be taller than the South Norfolk Jordan Bridge, may be coming to 17th Street. Koch Development of St. Louis wants to bring the colossal ride to the resort area and open it up by the summer of 2015.

Mariners' Museum has its own interesting history

NEWPORT NEWS The conceptual drawing for The Mariners' Museum called for a grand building on the east side of Lake Maury, overlooking the Lion's Bridge and the James River. The Great Depression canceled those plans. "The museum's never been built," quipped John Warren, a museum spokesman.

Hearings on N.C. ferry tolls get off to a feisty start

Tolls on what have been free ferries to North Carolina’s Knotts Island and Ocracoke could be coming in spite of public protests. The first of seven scheduled public hearings this week and next was held Tuesday in Knotts Island. An agitated crowd that nearly filled an elementary school gym spoke for more than two hours against starting tolls.

RICHMOND Carnival Cruise Lines is returning to Norfolk next year, Gov. Terry McAuliffe told the General Assembly on Monday night. The world's largest cruise line intends to resume sailing from Norfolk in spring 2015, McAuliffe announced.
