Fourth Norfolk school found to have SOL testing irregularities

An award-winning elementary school failed to test 16 students last spring during mandatory exams used by the state to gauge academic performance.

Dreamkeepers Academy is now the fourth Norfolk school found to have testing irregularities last year on the Standards of Learning exam or an alternative test.

Norfolk-based cruiser due home today from Haiti

The guided missile cruiser Normandy is set to return to Norfolk from Haiti today, the Navy announced this morning. The Normandy spent two weeks supporting the U.S. military's relief effort there. The ship's crew helped to deliver food and water to earthquake victims. It also assisted with medical evacuations.

Internet design firm purchases Granby Street spot

NORFOLK A Web and graphics design firm has purchased a 92-year-old building in downtown Norfolk and plans to renovate the space and relocate its headquarters there. Grow Interactive purchased the former Altschul's clothing store at 427 Granby St. for $610,000 and will spend an additional $600,000 to renovate the property, said Drew Ungvarsky, the company's president.

Neighbor carjacked after robbery is interrupted in Norfolk

NORFOLK

A Lake Taylor resident interrupted a burglary at his home, and one of the suspects carjacked a neighbor to make his escape, police said today. No injuries were reported in the 11:30 a.m. incident, but “numerous weapons” were stolen from the home, police said in a news release.

Potholes being repaired on eastbound I-264

NORFOLK Work crews will be repairing potholes today through the evening rush hour on eastbound Interstate 264, from the Berkley Bridge to Interstate 64, said Lauren Hansen, a Virginia Department of Transportation spokeswoman.

Lane closures begin on Norfolk's St. Paul's Boulevard

NORFOLK Sewer line relocation will cause lane closures on St. Paul's Boulevard beginning Tuesday, according to the city.

On Tuesday, and continuing through the month, the road will be reduced to one northbound lane and two southbound lanes between East Main Street and City Hall Avenue, a city news release says.

Destroyer Cole set to deploy from Norfolk

NORFOLK The guided missile destroyer Cole will deploy today from Norfolk Naval Station.  The deployment was pushed from Friday to today because of the weekend storm.
