Troubled ship's departure is delayed by gate problem

NORFOLK The amphibious transport dock San Antonio's departure for its maiden deployment has been postponed a day or two because of a mechanical problem with the stern gate, the Navy said Tuesday. The ship was scheduled to deploy with the Iwo Jima Expeditionary Strike Group, which began leaving Norfolk on Tuesday.

Submarine Jacksonville leaves Norfolk on 6-month mission

NORFOLK The  fast-attack submarine Jacksonville has left Norfolk on a six-month deployment for points undisclosed. Carrying 135 sailors under the commander of  Cmdr. John Kropcho III, the Navy said the Jacksonville will handle national security operations.

Destroyer McFaul set to deploy to Mediterranean Monday

NORFOLK The guided missile destroyer McFaul is scheduled to deploy Monday from Norfolk Naval Station for the Mediterranean Sea. The ship, with a crew of more than 300, will support securtiy operations, take part in exercises with allies and make diplomatic ports calls, according to the Navy.

Charity tournament planned in honor of slain Norfolk airman

A charity "Texas Hold'em" tournament will be held Friday at Pope Air Force Base in memory of a Norfolk man killed in action in Afghanistan last month. Tammy Davis, whose brother, Technical Sgt. William H. Jefferson Jr., died March 22, said the event is intended to become an annual fundraiser, benefiting a program that assists the children of service members killed in the line of duty.

NORFOLK While others finish high school unsure of their futures, William H. Jefferson had no doubts as he graduated from Norfolk’s Lake Taylor High School in 1991. He had already selected his life’s path and planned to march down it in a Marine Corps uniform, said his sister, Tammy Davis, 37, of Virginia Beach.
