Truman group's 7,500 sailors had a busy 7 months

NORFOLK When the Truman carrier strike group arrives home this morning, its nearly 7,500 sailors will begin a much deserved rest. The group spent the past seven months supporting ground troops in Iraq, watching pirates off the Horn of Africa, guarding oil platforms in the Persian Gulf and training with multiple navies from the west coast of Africa to the Black Sea.

Fighter squadron set to return to Oceana

VIRGINIA BEACH Strike Fighter Squadron 81, known as the Sunliners, is scheduled to return to Oceana tomorrow. The squadron had been deployed for four months the aircraft carrier Nimitz in the Pacific region.    

Guardsmen from Hampton Roads reunite with families

VIRGINIA BEACH About 350 National Guard soldiers from southeast Virginia were reunited with their families at a ceremony Saturday at Camp Pendleton.

The soldiers had served in Iraq and Kuwait since September.

Navy ship returns from West African exercises

NORFOLK About 400 sailors on the amphibious dock landing ship the Fort McHenry returned to Norfolk Sunday. The ship deployed to the Gulf of Guinea on the west coast of Africa on Oct. 17, 2007.

Sailors and soldiers set to return from Middle East Tuesday

  About 38 Navy sailors and 100 Army soldiers are scheduled to return from the Middle East to Langley Air Force Base at 5:45 a.m. on Tuesday. The Navy reservists are part of Navy Expeditionary Logistics Support Group, cargo handlers serving in Iraq and Kuwait. They are based in Jacksonville, Fla.

Coast Guard cutter Bear returns to Portsmouth from drug war

PORTSMOUTH On Friday, the Coast Guard Cutter Bear unloaded its prize: 1.6 tons of seized cocaine with a street value of $100 million. On Saturday, it sent ashore its treasure: more than 100 crew members, home after 66 days from the front lines on the war on illegal drugs. Value (with apologies to MasterCard): priceless.

Coast Guard Cutter Diligence returning to Wilmington, N.C.

The Coast Guard Cutter Diligence is scheduled to return to its home port of Wilmington, N.C. this afternoon after a 53-day law enforcement patrol in the Caribbean Sea.

During the patrol, the crew of the 210-foot cutter assisted in counter narcotics operations, according to a Coast Guard news release.
