Mary Lee may be heading north. After her satellite tracker pinged off Virginia Beach on Monday morning, she surfaced again this morning off the Eastern Shore. The great white shark that has become an Internet sensation had traveled a little more than 166 miles in the past 24 hours.
PORTSMOUTH The city and Army Corps of Engineers will spray Craney Island, the Churchland area and some city properties for mosquitoes today. Aerial spraying is set for 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and 5 to 10 p.m., depending on weather, a city news release says. The spraying from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. will use mosquito larvicide to target larvae on Craney Island.
Great white shark Mary Lee headed away from Albemarle Sound overnight and pinged off Virginia Beach this morning.
The 16-foot, 3,456-pound shark was swimming in the sound in North Carolina Sunday night, then her satellite tracker got a hit at 7:38 a.m. today off the Virginia Beach coast, according to the Oceach site.
CHESAPEAKE Solar panels will soon sit atop Western Branch High School's roof, generating enough energy to power hundreds of homes. Western Branch is the first high school in the state to enter Dominion Virginia Power's Solar Partnership Program, under which Dominion leases space at facilities to install solar panels. The energy they generate is delivered to the power grid.
VIRGINIA BEACH Animal Control is looking for a fox that reportedly bit two people at Great Neck Park on Shorehaven Drive. The incidents occurred Sunday morning around 7:30, according to a news release from Virginia Beach police. The two victims, both men, sought medical treatment, but there is no confirmation the fox is rabid. As a precaution, Great Neck Park is closed until further notice.
