Google rolled out a small update to its Google Maps iPhone app last night with little fanfare, but added a big improvement: spoken traffic alerts about congestion and incidents along your route. That means when you set up navigation from Norfolk to Hampton, it'll tell you whether the Monitor-Merrimack Memorial Bridge-Tunnel or the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel is the better option.

Norfolk, Va. Beach ranked fifth most likely to survive zombie apocalypse

Hampton Roads, particularly the cities of Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Newport News, has been ranked the fifth best area to survive a zombie apocalypse. CareerBuilder and Economic Modeling Specialists Intl. selected which cities in the U.S. they believe would survive the life-threatening scenario.

Traffic: I-64 closed after crash near Fort Eustis Blvd.

At 8:10 a.m., the Virginia Department of Transportation was reporting the following traffic issues: Interstate 64 A tractor-trailer crash had the eastbound lanes closed near Fort Eustis Boulevard. Drivers are being diverted at Lee Hall. Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel The backup to King Street had cleared. Coleman Bridge The bridge will open at 9:30 a.m.

WAYNESBORO Shenandoah National Park is closing Skyline Drive at night through the rest of the year in an effort to reduce illegal hunting.

Popular horse near Coinjock, N.C., Aggie, has died

Aggie the horse has died.
The death of the 23-year-old white horse was announced Wednesday on Facebook after she was found dead in the early morning.
Aggie was something of an ambassador for passing travelers on U.S. 158 near Coinjock.

Work to close lanes of Coleman Bridge tonight

YORKTOWN Maintenance will close two lanes on the Coleman Bridge tonight.  The two left northbound lanes will close at 8 p.m. and should reopen by 5 a.m. Friday, according to a news release from the Virginia Department of Transportation. Vehicles with an E-ZPass should use the center lanes. The far right lane will have a toll collector for drivers who need to use cash.

Weather: Continued chance for rain with a high of 77

There's a 40 percent chance of rain and patchy fog in store for today, according to the National Weather Service. The day will be warm with a high of 77 and nighttime low of 64. Friday clears up a bit, to be mostly sunny with an 81-degree high. Then showers return Saturday, likely with a 70 percent chance.  

Virginia Beach Mayor Sessoms charged with conflict of interest

Mayor Will Sessoms was charged Wednesday with five misdemeanor counts of violating the state’s Conflict of Interest Act for votes he cast that benefited borrowers of the bank where he served as a president, according to an email from the special prosecutor.
