SUFFOLK Police investigating the site of a weekend shooting discovered drugs, alcohol and other evidence of a drug and alcohol operation, police said.
SUFFOLK – A preliminary hearing was held in General District Court today for Paul Thompson, a man charged with first-degree murder after the burned body of Terry Lamont Wilson was found in a burned SUV near the Suffolk/Chesapeake line in late April.
SUFFOLK – Demetrius Lamont Neely will go on trial Dec. 3, charged with first-degree murder in the killing of Melik E. Powell 10 years ago.
Neely, 31, pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and five other feloniesin his arraignment in Circuit Court this morning.
CHESAPEAKE One lane of the Gilmerton Bridge will be closed for repairs today and tomorrow. The closure, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. both days, will affect the outside eastbound lane, according to a city news release. The closure is necessary to repair a railing that was damaged during a recent crash.

Donte’ DeShawn Newsome, 25, died July 5 after being shot outside a nightclub in Huntington, according to police.
NEWPORT NEWS Firefighters were called to an apartment fire this morning in the 500 block of Adams Drive, dispatchers confirmed. No injuries were reported. The fire was reported to dispatchers at 3:41 a.m. and was under control by 4:16 a.m., dispatchers said. The blaze was reported in a kitchen and another apartment was damaged by smoke and water, WVEC-TV was reporting.
VIRGINIA BEACH A 23-year-old man died in an automobile accident on Virginia Beach Boulevard late Sunday night. A police dispatcher said the accident occured about 11:27 p.m., at the boulevard's intersection with Roselynn Lane. Roselynn Lane was closed to Oceana Boulevard. Three cars were involved, the dispatcher said.
Improvements to the Chesapeake Expressway are prompting lane closures that start today and continue through Oct. 3.
Crews will be repaving and working on the median and shoulder, according to a city news release.
The closures will begin at 7 a.m. and end at 5 p.m. daily, Monday through Friday, the release says.
Swells from Bertha, now a tropical storm, are expected to cause dangerous rip currents at beaches today.
The National Weather Service was warning this morning that the risk of rip currents is high today and into tonight and was urging swimmers to be cautious.
