Dominion Virginia Power announced a program Friday that it says should cut the number of wide-winged birds being electrocuted. Dominion will modify about 220,000 of its 1.4 million power poles in a voluntary program that will take at least a decade, said Dan Genest, a utility spokesman.
CHESAPEAKE No one was injured, but a family of five was displaced by a house fire this evening in Deep Creek section of the city. At 6:54 p.m., fire crews responded to the 1400 block of Shady Tree Way off Mount Pleasant Road. The fire in the two-story, single-family home was under control in about eight minutes, according to a news release.
HAMPTON Police detained three people this afternoon after serving a search warrant in the 400 block of Greenbriar Ave. Police blocked the road while the warrant was served, according to a post on the police Twitter feed. The search involved the department’s SWAT officers. No other details were immediately available.
NEWPORT NEWS A man told police he was shot in his car this morning in the area of 79th Street and Roanoke Avenue. Police got a report of shots fired in that area about 2:15 a.m., according to a police news release. When officers arrived in that area, they found shell casings, but no victim.
NEWPORT NEWS A police officer was taken to a hospital as a precaution after he was involved in a crash on his way to investigate a report of a shooting Thursday night.
PORTSMOUTH The eastbound Downtown Tunnel toward Norfolk will be closed this weekend. The closure begins at 8 p.m. tonight and should end by 5 a.m. Monday, according to a news release from Elizabeth River Tunnels.
MAPLE, N.C. The Currituck Animal Shelter needs volunteers to walk dogs awaiting adoption. County staff cleans cages and cares for the animals, said county spokesman Randall Edwards. “They are asking for the public’s help to get the dogs some much-needed exercise,” he said.
HAMPTON Police have charged a man in a shooting in the 2000 block of Seldendale Drive. Officers were sent to the scene of the shooting shortly after 6:55 p.m. When they arrived, they found a 19-year-old who was taken to a hospital with injuries believed to be life-threatening.
NORFOLK Police are looking for two men who robbed the 7-Eleven at 909 E. Ocean View Ave. Tuesday night. The armed men went into the store shortly before 10:30 p.m. and demanded money, police wrote in a news release. Once they received the money, the fled on bicycles. No injuries were reported.
