Boone makes most of return of Wild Turkey

BLACKSBURG It took 11 games, but the Wild Turkey finally reappeared - and fittingly, on Senior Day. Tight end Greg Boone, an Oscar Smith High grad playing his final home game for Virginia Tech, took his first four snaps of the season in the formation he made popular last year. And he nearly tossed his first career touchdown pass.

As season-high trip nears end, Admirals lose in Portland

PORTLAND, Maine Mitch Fritz netted his first goal of the season and Justin Keller scored for the fifth time in 2009-10. However, the Norfolk Admirals fell to the Portland Pirates 4-2 on Saturday night at the Cumberland County Civic Center. The Admirals (10-10-1-0) dropped to 2-3-1-0 through six contests of their eight-game road trip.

ODU aces early test vs. tougher foe

NORFOLK It had been a week of 30-point leads, bulging box scores, and blow-out wins for Old Dominion. That changed Saturday night when the Monarchs, as expected, found themselves in a tightly contested game for the first time in this young season.

Earnhardt doesn't want season to end despite woes

Demarco poised to be nation's leading scorer

LEXINGTON Old Dominion quarterback Thomas DeMarco said after Saturday's 42-35 victory over VMI that he intends to spend the next week "in an ice bath." ODU's sophomore quarterback, who transferred in from a junior college in California last winter, finished the season with 21 touchdown passes and 17 rushing touchdowns as he accounted for 230 points.

Early gamble pays off as Monarchs close season on high

LEXINGTON From the afternoon's first moment - when Old Dominion opened the game by recovering its own onside kick - the finish to the Monarchs' season was a little wilder than anyone could have expected. It was a case of Bobby Wilder living up to his name. The onside kick, ODU's coach said, was meant to be "a statement to our kids."

Sloppy play early costs NSU hoops at Iona

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. Scott Machado scored 20 points, including 11 in the final 5:49, as Iona remained undefeated with an 80-68 victory over Norfolk State on Saturday. Six of Machado's final 11 came from the free throw line, where the Gaels (3-0) were 23 for 37 to the Spartans' 13 for 28. Kyle Smith added 14 points for Iona, which got 13 from Mike McFadden and 10 from Keon Williams.

BLACKSBURG Virginia Tech football fans were reminded Saturday of what they will miss next season. But also how much they have to look forward to. Linebacker Cody Grimm, playing the final home game of his career, forced a fumble on the first play of the game - just the beginning of a smothering, historic individual performance.

U.Va loses season finale to Clemson 34-21
