By Jim Hodges Correspondent NORFOLK Arithmetic alone says the Admirals got an important point in the AHL standings Friday in a 3-2 shootout loss to Bridgeport at Scope. But Leigh Mendelson wasn't having any of it. "It's not a good point when you blow a 2-1 lead," said Mendelson, the Admirals' interim coach. Ryan Craig agreed.
The Norfolk Admirals made a host of player moves Wednesday in advance of this weekend's home series against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
By Jim Hodges Correspondent Until lately, the line on the back of the Admirals No. 16 sweater could have read "Space for Rent." Tommy Goebel wore No. 16 for a game, as did Connor Shields. Jamie Fritsch had it for two. Ryan Cruthers had it for five games - four more than he expected.
NORFOLK The Norfolk Admirals ran out of gas early in Saturday's game at Scope. The rigors of a long road trip, little rest before an important weekend homestand and players missing action due to injuries added up to a 4-2 loss to Albany before the second largest home crowd of the season (6,108).
By Jim Hodges, Correspondent NORFOLK It hardly seemed fair. Admirals goalie Jaroslav Janus had spent the last 1:20 of overtime as a duck, downrange in a shooting gallery, and now he had to face whatever Albany could send at him one-on-one. Jacob Micflikier tried in the shootout. Janus flicked his shot away with a glove. Drayson Bowman tried. Pad save by Janus.
By Jim Hodges Correspondent Just before 10 p.m. Wednesday, the Admirals skated off the ice in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., 4-2 losers in a game in which they had two shots in the third period.
WILKES-BARRE, PA. Konstantin Pushkarev's goal with 8:06 left in the third period broke a 2-2 tie and sent the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to a 4-2 victory over the Norfolk Admirals in an AHL game on Wednesday night.
Staff report Syracuse, N.Y. Juraj Simek's rebound goal with 4:06 left, his second of the game, helped the Norfolk Admirals overcome a blown 2-0 lead for a 3-2 victory over the Syracuse Crunch on Sunday. It was the second straight victory for the Admirals (33-26-3-1), who won at Binghamton 3-2 in a shootout Saturday night.
Staff report Glens Falls, N.Y. The Norfolk Admirals saw their four-game winning streak end and fell to third place in the AHL's East Division on Friday after a 3-2 setback to the Adirondack Phantoms at the Glens Falls Civic Center. Rookies Dana Tyrell and Mitch Fadden scored for the Admirals (31-26-3-1), who never led.
By Jim Hodges, Correspondent The surging Norfolk Admirals opened a five-game trip Wednesday at Binghamton, N.Y., looking to solidify their American Hockey League playoff position. The coach who put them there, however, was in Tampa.
