LEXINGTON, Ky. The Norfolk State fans in the corner of Commonwealth Stadium flickered like gold against a setting so blue it might as well have been an island in the sea on Saturday. And though the Spartans couldn't pull off the upset, they gave those folks plenty to cheer about in a 38-3 loss to Kentucky.
GREENVILLE, N.C. Skip Holtz could no longer contain himself. Walking off the field following East Carolina's 24-3 win against No. 8 West Virginia on Saturday evening, the Pirates' coach momentarily broke away from the state trooper who was escorting him, leaped as high as his 44-year-old legs would allow and pumped his fist in the air.
BLACKSBURG Sean Glennon has resorted to prayer and Seinfeld references. He's hoping to a higher power that the Hokies haven't broken up with him for good. While Virginia Tech's fifth-year senior quarterback started Saturday's game against Furman - and finished it - he disappeared for large chunks of the 24-7 win, yielding to sophomore Tyrod Taylor.
LEXINGTON, Ky. Justin Castellat's 24-yard field goal was the lone score for Norfolk State, which fell 38-3 to Kentucky on Saturday at Commonwealth Stadium. Kentucky quarterback Randall Cobb, a true freshman who relieved Mike Hartline in the first quarter, ran for two touchdowns and scored another as the Wildcats scored the first 21 points.
By Doug Doughty CHARLOTTESVILLE One year ago, Mike London would have been delighted with Virginia's defensive performance against Richmond. On Saturday, he could only admire it. London, the Cavaliers' defensive coordinator for the past two seasons, was on the losing end Saturday as U.Va. blanked his first Spiders' team 16-0 at Scott Stadium.
BLACKSBURG Maybe Virginia Tech cornerback Victor "Macho" Harris was just excited to be back on the field after watching helplessly as the Hokies were upset by East Carolina in last week's opener. Perhaps he was thrilled that, after Tech's poor tackling sunk the team against the Pirates, the Hokies were hitting hard and wrapping up Saturday against Furman.

BLACKSBURG Bud Foster can't rewind last week's loss to East Carolina, but today's game against Division I-AA Furman is the next best thing. It's as close as Virginia Tech's defensive coordinator is going to get to a preseason game.
The Associated Press MUNCIE, Ind. Nate Davis passed for 326 yards and four touchdowns and Ball State's defense repeatedly came up with big stops in the second half of a 35-23 victory against Navy on Friday night.
NORFOLK Their defensive linemen are downright daunting. Every one of the 68,000 seats in Commonwealth Stadium is expected to be filled. They limited Louisville to a safety in their opener. The Kentucky Wildcats might not be among the favorites to win the SEC, but they are the best team on Norfolk State's schedule and an imposing challenge.
