By Joseph White ASHBURN The Redskins' Hunter Smith is getting a lot of attention for a punter. In Washington's season opener he scored a touchdown, running 8 yards on a fake field goal. Then he got hurt. Twice. The pulled groin in his kicking leg forced the Redskins to use three other punters over a five-game span. Smith nearly went on the season-ending injured reserve list.

ASHBURN, Va. One is a 30-year-old veteran who keeps his battered body limber with mixed martial arts, treadmill work and Filipino fighting sticks. The other is a rookie who basically shows up and does his thing.

WASHINGTON The Supreme Court won't hear an appeal from a group of Native Americans who think the name of the NFL's Washington Redskins football team is offensive.
By JOSEPH WHITE ASHBURN, Va. Clinton Portis is still experiencing "a little blurriness" from his concussion, making it uncertain whether the Washington Redskins running back will play next week against Dallas.
When Portis does come back, he'll regain his starting job — even though the Redskins had their best rushing day of the season without him.
Bystanders: When DeAngelo Hall was involved in that shoving match on the Falcons sideline and Atlanta coach Mike Smith was trying to get at him, Hall's defensive mates didn't exactly rush to his aid. Might tell you something about the make-up of the Redskins - or what they think of Hall.

ASHBURN, Va. The Washington Redskins are shuffling their lineup again after losing their strong safety and right tackle to multiweek injuries.
In addition, Clinton Portis is recovering from a concussion and is doubtful to play in next week's game against Denver.

ASHBURN, Va. DeAngelo Hall says he was only trying to help a teammate. Mike Smith says he was trying to restore order. If that's the case, how did the Washington Redskins cornerback and the Atlanta Falcons coach end up in the middle of such an untidy scrum?

Dan Snyder is embarrassed. He feels terrible. He's also hurt, frustrated and apologetic. Name a downbeat adjective, and he's all over it.
Landover, Md. One good thing about the Washington Redskins burning down to cinders. It has exposed for good the incompetence as an NFL franchise owner of Daniel Snyder, if somewhere there remained a sliver of doubt. A nation of football fans Monday night saw for themselves, in stupefied degrees, the smoking heap that was further trashed, 27-17, by the Philadelphia Eagles at FedEx Field.
By Rick Maese and Jason Reid ASHBURN As Redskins players filed into the locker room following Friday's practice, most hadn't heard that Vinny Cerrato, the team's executive vice president of football operations, had stated publicly that Jim Zorn would finish the season as Washington's head coach. Told of the news, linebacker London Fletcher smiled and pumped his first.
