Flooding pervades Hampton Roads, but sun is just around the corner

Strong winds and high tides pushed water around Hampton Roads on Sunday, drowning the land even as rain abated. The high tide brought flooding woes to areas already drenched, including Ocean View in Norfolk and Portsmouth City Hall. Several thoroughfares and city streets were closed for high water, while wind advisories limited traffic on bridges such as the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. ____

More debris found, but no word on fate of ship lost off Bahamas

NASSAU, Bahamas The search for a U.S. cargo ship lost during Hurricane Joaquin off the southeastern Bahamas turned up more clues Sunday but no word yet on the fate of the vessel or its 33-member crew.

A weakening Hurricane Joaquin lashes out at Bermuda

HAMILTON, Bermuda Bermuda was lashed Sunday by gusting winds and pelting rains from a weakening Hurricane Joaquin as its spinning center tracked just west of the wealthy financial haven and tourist destination after plowing through the Bahamas as a major storm.

Predicting the economic impact of a big storm is about as difficult as forecasting the path of Hurricane Joaquin. Either way, there are winners. (Last week would have been a good time to buy stock in Home Depot.) There are losers. (Has anyone been golfing lately?)

Jamestown-Scotland ferry service resumes — for now

Jamestown-Scotland Ferry service has resumed after it was temporarily suspended due to high tide. Waters have to recede enough to allow ramps to be secured for loading vehicles, according to a news release from the Virginia Department of Transportation. Thus, the department warns riders that the ferry service may be suspended again at the next high tide.

Power restored to Joint Forces Staff College, Navy Gateway Inns & Suites

NORFOLK Power has been restored to housing at Joint Forces Staff College and Navy Gateway Inns & Suites, according to Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads. Crews were on scene after a downed power line caused an outage for a little over an hour starting at 8 p.m., NSA posted on Facebook.  

Gas leak fouls up Ocean View

NORFOLK A natural gas leak Sunday afternoon in Ocean View had firefighters and Virginia Natural Gas employees searching for a source as rain and pounding surf hampered their efforts. A neighbor reported the leak in the residential neighborhood at the corner of Ocean View and Sea View avenues around 2:30 p.m.
