CHESAPEAKE In two small buildings behind his suburban home, Roy Kinser has spent the better part of 12 years tending to his passion. Kinser loves racing pigeons. A Democratic group that created a stir with a voter-registration drive at two Chesapeake high schools is being investigated by Charlottesville prosecutors after it missed a deadline to turn in applications from Virginians it helped to register to vote.
CHESAPEAKE A 20-year-old man was killed early Friday in a one-vehicle crash in the 1700 block of Indian Creek Road, according to police. Responding to a 911 call at 1:43 a.m., police found a Dodge van had struck a tree. The driver, Charles P. Awbrey Jr. of Knotts Island, N.C., was ejected from the van and died at the scene in the rural southeast section of the city, police said.

A driver was killed in a collision Monday afternoon.
The driver was traveling in the westbound lane of the 4300 block of Bruce Road and crossed into oncoming traffic about 3:45 p.m., hitting a car head-on. They said they did not believe drugs or alcohol were a factor.
CHESAPEAKE The closure of the Gilmerton Bridge that had been scheduled for this evening has been cancelled and is rescheduled for Thursday, July 7.
CHESAPEAKE City Manager William Harrell kept his job and got a raise after Tuesday's late-night council evaluation. "I certainly thank the mayor and the council for their confidence in me," Harrell said. "We have made enormous progress from financial performance to addressing the concerns of the citizens.
CHESAPEAKE Full-time school employees will receive a $500 bonus on April 15, just before spring break. Superintendent James Roberts proposed the measure Monday night and the School Board unanimously approved it. It doesn't apply to employees who started working for the division after Monday.

On Saturday at 10 a.m. the Chesapeake Parks and Recreation Department will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony dedicating a new $1.5 million addition to the Camelot Community Center, 948 King Arthur Drive in the city’s Deep Creek section.

A bomb threat prompted officials to evacuate the General District and Circuit Court building this morning.
The call came in about 9:30 a.m., according to sheriff’s deputies and court officials.
The building was checked, and nothing was found. The building was reopened before 10 a.m.
