Suffolk trailer park residents forced to scramble

SUFFOLK When Eddie Uzzel learned that the place he called home would close at the end of the year, he did what he had to do: He found a location for his neat mobile home in Southampton County, made arrangements to have it moved, and began to pack up. But it didn't take Uzzel long to realize that his neighbors at Southside Trailer Court weren't moving as swiftly and surely as he was.

Dismal Swamp still burns despite 15 inches of rain

SUFFOLK More than a foot of rain hasn't stopped the fire from burning at Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge.

The Daily Press reports that despite 15 inches of rain and more on the way, the nearly 2-month-old wildfire continues to smolder.

Truck fire shuts stretch of U.S. 58 in Suffolk

A stretch of U.S. 58 in Suffolk remained closed Wednesday evening because of a fire involving a tractor-trailer.
 
A hazardous-materials team reported that conditions were stabilized shortly before 8:30 p.m., city spokeswoman Debbie George said.

Body found off Constant's Wharf in Suffolk

SUFFOLK A man's body was found in the water about 100 feet off Constant's Wharf Marina in Suffolk. It was discovered Friday during a routine marine patrol at the wharf's no-wake zone, said city spokeswoman Debbie George. The man's body was taken to the medical examiner's office to determine his identity and how he died. The investigation is continuing.

Suffolk to host community day

SUFFOLK 

The city of Suffolk will host an East Suffolk Community Day & Open House from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the East Suffolk Community Center, 138 S. 6th St.

The free event, which has been organized to celebrate health, fitness and active living, will feature activities geared towards a healthy body and mind.

Suffolk woman charged after boyfriend injured in hit-and-run

SUFFOLK

A man's girlfriend was charged after he was struck by a car and taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in serious condition Sunday morning. Shannon M. Goldston, 21, of Suffolk was charged with malicious wounding, hit-and-run property damage, driving a motor vehicle while license is suspended or revoked, and reckless driving, a Suffolk police news release said.

Suffolk School Board meeting to discuss band trip

The School Board has called a special meeting for 10:15 a.m. today to consider contributing to a high school band trip and to continue discussions about the superintendent search and the location of a new elementary school.
