Close Encounters | Storms spur bird migration

With each successive nor'easter, more and more birds, from tiny warblers to big hawks, will migrate through the area. They funnel down the Eastern Shore, wait for favorable winds to help them make the Chesapeake Bay crossing, then travel down the Virginia Beach coast. The beauties will show up at bird feeders and in natural areas all over the beach in the next weeks.

Maintenance man recalls early days of Va. Beach hotel

VIRGINIA BEACH Keith White has been working maintenance at The Belvedere Beach Resort since 1972, two years after it opened. The owners are tearing down the Oceanfront landmark near 35th Street to make way for a Home2 Suites by Hilton. White came across some old photo albums while cleaning out storage units in preparation for a liquidation sale of hotel furnishings.

Taking in nature at Hoffler Creek

Nature is returning with a little help from her friends, the pine trees, to Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve in Portsmouth. The 142-acre preserve is a great example of land, once home to a treeless farm and a huge borrow pit, that is returning to a natural habitat.

National yoga festival coming to Virginia Beach in October

Virginia Beach Drishti Fest, a four-day national yoga festival, will be coming to Virginia Beach Oct. 8 through 11 at the Sheraton Virginia Beach Oceanfront Hotel. The festival will bring in 10 internationally known instructors as well as more than 25 from the area. The classes will range from novice to advanced, and cover various types of yoga.
