Republicans smell blood in the water after Tuesday’s wave of statewide victories in Virginia, pointing to four Democratic-held House districts where Republican Gov.-elect Bob McDonnell ran up the score.

NORFOLK Reel off Virginia's most pressing problems, and you can find them all in Hampton Roads' 90th District. Congested interstate highways, growing universities, schools that haven't met state standards, industrial sites that lack tenants and residents searching for jobs.

Scott Taylor, who made an unsuccessful bid for Virginia Beach mayor in 2008, announced he will seek the GOP nomination for the state's 2nd Congressional District.

Scott Taylor, who made an unsuccessful bid for Virginia Beach mayor in 2008, announced he will seek the GOP nomination for the state’s 2nd Congressional District.

A Virginia Beach businessman and naval reservist is seeking the Republican nomination to run next year against U.S. Rep. Glenn Nye, a Democrat. Ben Loyola, owner of Loyal Enterprises, an engineering firm, on Thursday joined two other Republicans who want the nomination for the 2nd congressional District seat.

The field of Republicans who want to run against first-term U.S. Rep. Glenn Nye, D-Norfolk, is starting to get crowded. Auto dealer and longtime GOP donor Scott Rigell is the latest entrant in a contest that is about 16 months away from an election.

VIRGINIA BEACH So far, Peter Schmidt said, the issue hasn't really come up. The 82nd District candidate insists most of the discussion during his door-to-door campaign has centered on his goals for local and regional transportation. Or his income-tax-relief plan. Occasionally, he'll even field a query about the state of University of Virginia football.

VIRGINIA BEACH In her first winter in 14 years not spent in Richmond or Washington, former U.S. Rep. Thelma Drake says she's both busy and not busy. Busy spending lots of time with her four grandchildren, going to their basketball and football games and taking them to movies - "Hotel for Dogs" was really good, she says.

U.S. Rep. Glenn Nye, D-Norfolk, is hosting open houses for constituents Saturday, Jan. 24, in his Eastern Shore and Virginia Beach offices. Nye, elected last November, will be on hand to greet visitors from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at his Eastern Shore office, 23386 Front Street in Accomac. He’ll be at his Beach office at 4772 Euclid Road from 1-3 p.m..

WASHINGTON Hampton Roads will get two new voices in the nation’s capital on Tuesday, as Rep.-elect Glenn Nye and Sen.-elect Mark Warner take their oaths of office. Nye and Warner, both Democrats, will be sworn in during separate ceremonies at midday.
