CHESAPEAKE Republican Ron Villanueva was re-elected Tuesday to the 21st District seat in the House of Delegates, defeating challenger Susan Hippen. Villanueva, a small-business owner and former Virginia Beach City Councilman, has been a state delegate since 2009.
Virginia Republicans handed Gov. Terry McAuliffe a defeat in Tuesday's General Assembly election, holding their Senate majority in a year when the Democratic governor had predicted his party would take control of the chamber.
VIRGINIA BEACH Republican Jason Miyares won in a landslide over Bill Fleming in the race to represent northeastern Virginia Beach in the House of Delegates' 82nd District. Miyares, 39, a political consultant and former prosecutor, takes the seat of Bill DeSteph, a one-term delegate who ran for state Senate. It was the first bid for elected office by Miyares, a veteran political adviser.
Incumbent Del. John Miller fended off Republican challenger Mark Matney in a race for the state Senate's 1st District seat. The 1st District covers the city of Williamsburg, most of Newport News, parts of Suffolk and Hampton, and parts of James City and York counties.
NORFOLK State Sen. Lynwood Lewis, D-Accomack, handily defeated Republican challenger Richard Ottinger, a maritime lawyer who lives in Norfolk, in the Senate's 6th District. Lewis, who practices law, barely won the seat in a January 2014 special election by beating Republican businessman Wayne Coleman. The seat opened up when Ralph Northam was elected lieutenant governor.
State Sen. Frank Wagner easily won re-election Tuesday, defeating Democratic first-time candidate Gary McCollum in one of the year's most abrasive and expensive contests.
RICHMOND A nonprofit's analysis of political advertising shows that Virginia candidates and outside groups spent more than $10 million running more than 20,000 TV ads this election season. Michael Bloomberg's gun control group led all spenders with $2.1 million in estimated spending trying to help Democrats in two key Senate seats, based on an analysis by The Center for Public Integrity.
