CHESAPEAKE A little one-two passing between Grassfield's Corey Cullop and Michael Abraham put the Hickory defense to sleep. Then Evan McNair's header woke everyone up. McNair's second-half strike held up and the Grizzlies beat the Hawks 1-0 in the Southeastern District tournament championship Thursday at Grassfield.
CHESAPEAKE Michael Cherry thought he was destined to be a football player. A long, lanky receiver with breakaway speed, he believed he was talented enough to someday star on the Oscar Smith High School football team. So he mostly overlooked track. "I can count the number of practices he came to on one hand," said Walt Green, coach of the Real Deal club track team.
SUFFOLK The defending Group AAA baseball champions are making another postseason run. Great Bridge won the Southeastern District tournament title and a spot in the Eastern Region tournament with a 12-7 victory over Western Branch on Wednesday.
Girls Southeastern District Grassfield 2, Western Branch 1 Hannah Walker chipped in the winning goal from 18 yards out in the 23rd minute, and defending Eastern Region champion Grassfield (10-2-4) rallied from a 1-0 deficit to top the Bruins (10-5-2) on Wednesday.
CHESAPEAKE Great Bridge's Taj Owens has signed to play basketball at Radford. Owens, a 5-foot-10 senior guard, helped lead the Wildcats to their first Southeastern District regular-season title since 2000. They also won a school-record 21 games.

SUFFOLK Grassfield thrower Kiara Howell and the Western Branch boys and girls track teams dominated the Southeastern District track meet. Howell made her mark Thursday night, winning the shot put with a throw of 49 feet, 11-1/2 inches. Her performance is the state's all-time record, surpassing the previous mark of Menchville's Tracey Toon (49-9 in 1982). Still, Howell wasn't satisfied.
Baseball Southeastern quarterfinals Great Bridge 1, Indian River 0 Charlie Cody broke a scoreless game with a scoreboard-clearing solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning and the Wildcats eliminated the Braves on Friday at Nansemond River High School. Connor Jones struck out 10 in a complete-game three-hit shutout for Great Bridge, which will play Nansemond River on Tuesday.
