Virginia landowners are squaring off in court with attorneys representing energy companies over land surveys for a natural gas pipeline from West Virginia to North Carolina. Attorneys for the landowners were in Augusta County Circuit Court on Wednesday defending their clients' decision to refuse access to their land to surveyors plotting a route for the Atlantic Coast Pipeline.
RICHMOND The state Board of Education on Thursday approved the criteria for new school accreditation ratings. Accreditation is based largely on how a school performs on state Standards of Learning exams. Generally, 75 percent of students must pass in English, and 70 percent must pass in math, science and history for full accreditation. High schools must also meet a graduation index of 85.

ETTRICK A shooting near Virginia State University has left one man dead and another injured. Police investigators identified the victim in the Wednesday night shooting as De'Sean R. Harrison, 24, of Colonial Heights, according to media reports. He was one of two men taken to Southside Regional Medical Center. The other man has injuries that are not life-threatening.
CHRISTIANSBURG A Virginia school division that suspended students for wearing clothing emblazoned with the Confederate battle flag to school is moving toward a broader policy on the symbol. The Montgomery County School Board voted 6-0 Tuesday night to have a policy drafted that would ban all clothing, emblems, decals or jewelry with the Confederate flag from all school property in the county.
RICHMOND Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's gun control group is set to spend heavily in at least one key legislative election in Virginia. Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund said Wednesday that it plans to spend $700,000 to help the Democratic candidate in a closely contested Richmond-area state Senate race that could determine which party controls the upper chamber.
