SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY The sheriff's office is investigating the death of an inmate. Deputies at the jail found Grant A. Gordon, 41, of Virginia Beach dead today at about 6 a.m., according to a news release from the Southampton County Sheriff's Office. Gordon was serving 12 years for distribution of narcotics. The Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death, the news release said.

BOYKINS Two men have been arrested in connection with a shooting at a convenience store Monday night.

FRANKLIN Steam is rising again from International Paper's Franklin mill. The mill on Union Camp Drive recently resumed operations to get ready for a June startup of the renovated facility. In its new form, the mill will make fluff pulp that's used in baby diapers, adult-incontinence products, feminine-hygiene products and medical wipes.

WINDSOR A 15-year-old girl was tied to a tree with ratchet straps, had eggs thrown at her and beer poured over her. Her attackers were her guardians and their neighbors, according to the Isle of Wight County Sheriff's Office.

ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY The barking tree frog is a threatened species in Virginia, known to live and breed in just five counties, including this rural one along the James River. It is the largest frog in Virginia - and quirky, too, with platelike suckers on its fingers and a penchant for mating after heavy rains.

WINDSOR It wasn't a clean getaway, authorities said. A man drove his pickup to a farm field in the 12000 block of Blue Ridge Trail on Wednesday and helped himself to four 150-pound livestock feeders, according to the Isle of Wight Sheriff's Office. Then he tried to drive away. But his truck got stuck in the mud.

SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY A 50-year-old man was charged Thursday with stealing an air-conditioner unit. A resident called the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office Thursday to report a suspicious truck in a yard in the 15000 block of Ivor Road in Sedley, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office. The resident didn’t recognize the truck.

ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY A 49-year-old woman was injured in a single-vehicle crash on U.S. 258 Monday night and now faces charges.

SUSSEX COUNTY Pink, featherless and just 4 days old, the newest addition to a wildlife recovery experiment here in the pine woods of Virginia was definitely not ready for the media on Monday. The baby red-cockaded woodpecker, still blind and barely able to lift its head, seemed more ready for a nap or another snack of ants and tree roaches.

ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY Items worth about $6,000 have been stolen from various unlocked cars in the past week.
