Authorities investigating slashed school bus tires in Smithfield

ISLE OF WIGHT Several buses for five schools in northern Isle of Wight County ran late Monday morning because someone damaged their tires over the weekend.

Judge dismisses hunters' trespassing charges, but urges dialogue

ISLE OF WIGHT A General District Court judge on Wednesday used trespassing charges against two hunters as an opportunity to warn the hunting community about respecting the rights of landowners. Judge James A. Moore of Suffolk, serving as a substitute judge in Isle of Wight, also told landowners to properly post their land and open dialogues with neighboring hunters.

Michael Vick's state dogfighting trial rescheduled for June

Michael Vick’s state trial on dogfighting charges was rescheduled today for June 27.

Vick, the suspended NFL quarterback from Newport News, was originally scheduled to be tried April 2, but Surry County Commonwealth’s Attorney Gerald Poindexter asked in a joint motion with defense attorneys to push the date back.

Siren tests scheduled for Surry Power Station

The early warning siren system around the Surry Power Station will be tested next week.

The test will happen at 11:10 a.m. when the siren sounds a steady, three-minute tone, according to a news release from the Virginia Department of Emergency Management. A total of 68 sirens will sound in Williamsburg, Newport News and Surry County, James City County, York County and Isle of Wight County.

Fire destroys wood-working businesses in Isle of Wight Co.

CARROLLTON A warehouse that housed a pair of family-owned woodworking businesses was destroyed by fire Sunday, despite an almost daylong effort by more than 50 firefighters. The fire left Davidson Enterprises Inc., in the 23000 block of Vellines Lane, a smoldering wreck. No injuries were reported.

Tractor-trailer crash closes eastbound lanes on U.S 460

ISLE OF WIGHT

A tractor-trailer crash has closed down the eastbound lanes of U.S. 460. No injuries were reported. State police were called about the crash at 11:38 a.m., said Sgt. Michelle Cotten, state police spokeswoman. The crash occurred near Va. 600, Cotten said.  The truck was too heavy to tow, so it was being unloaded.
