HAMPTON
A woman and her teenage son are being helped by the American Red Cross after a kitchen fire heavily damaged their home.
Firefighters were called to the home in the 1100 block of Quash St. about 6:20 p.m. Sunday after neighbors spotted smoke coming from the home, according to Fire Marshal Anne-Marie Loughran.
When firefighters arrived, they spotted the smoke and the fire quickly spread to the attic, according to Loughran. No one was hurt.
The fire was out by 6:43 p.m., Loughran said. The blaze was blamed on a pot left on a stove.
The woman did have insurance and the home’s smoke detector was working, according to Loughran.
