Candy Hatcher is an editorial writer for The Virginian-Pilot.
Candy is a native of North Carolina and joined the Virginian-Pilot in August 2006 after four years as an editor for the Chicago Tribune. She previously was a metro columnist for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, and before that, an editorial writer, reporter and state editor for The Palm Beach Post. She also has worked for the Wilmington (N.C.) Star-News and the Burlington (N.C.) Times-News.
Candy holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Wake Forest University and a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. She has won awards from the American Bar Association, the National Education Writers Association, the Society for Professional Journalists and various state press associations. But her favorite story was following Chessie the manatee (named for the Chesapeake Bay, which he visited several times) as he traveled from Florida up the East Coast to Rhode Island, charming everyone in his wake.
Candy lives in Virginia Beach with her husband and lab mutt.
