Karl Werne lives in Virginia Beach and began performing at an early age. He spent eight years with local favorites the Lewis McGehee Group and four years with his own Instant Karma.
The singer/songwriter plays acoustic, improv and freestyle guitar and can be seen doing it as a solo act or with Karl Werne and Friends locally.
These Friends are saxophonist Eddie Williams -– with whom he’s played and recorded with for more than 10 years; Dana Silvercloud; Curtis Eley; Dan Martier; and pianist John Toomey.
He has opened for Bruce Hornsby, Keb’ Mo’, Leon Russell, Livingston Taylor, David Bromberg and Richie Havens.
Performing all over the country, Werne is also a member of the singing/songwriting trio Big Wide Grin – which has two members on the East Coast and one on the West.
Werne with Big Wide Grin will be doing a local show Feb. 10 at Abbey Road in Virginia Beach.
Have you ever been stiffed by a venue and, if so, what happened?
Yes. But fortunately, we had a contract, and even though he was a lawyer, we won the court battle.
What is your earliest musical memory?
I have it on film. I got a little toy xylophone for Christmas at 18 months.
What was the best live show you ever saw?
Many, but Frank Zappa’s band comes to mind.
What’s your worst performance memory?
Old Reggie’s at Waterside, outdoor, under a tent, pouring rain, electric guitar. I got shocked so bad my lips were burned and my arm went numb for a song or two.
If you could write your own headline, what would it be?
They ask you that on My Space. Mine reads “Hold Everything Sacred, Take Nothing Too Seriously.”
