O'Reilly brings national battle over fatal wreck to mayor's home

VIRGINIA BEACH - Bill O'Reilly is taking his fight straight to Mayor Meyera Oberndorf.

Days after the Fox News personality first blamed Oberndorf in the deaths of two teenagers killed in a drunken driving wreck, one of O'Reilly's producers showed up Monday in the mayor's driveway.

A flustered-looking Oberndorf dodged questions and politely asked the producer to leave. Oberndorf's husband, Roger, grabbed a microphone in the producer's hand before angrily answering a few queries.

The confrontation was the latest twist in the fallout from a March 30 wreck that killed two friends, Alison Kunhardt, 17, and Tessa Tranchant, 16. An illegal immigrant, Alfredo Ramos, 22, was charged with aggravated involuntary manslaughter after the crash, sparking O'Reilly's furor over illegal immigration.

The case has since garnered national attention as a flashpoint in the immigration debate, in part because Ramos, who police said was drinking the day of the wreck, had three previous alcohol-related convictions in Chesapeake and Virginia Beach.

Those facts led O'Reilly last week to label Virginia Beach a "sanctuary city," his term for places that do not aggressively prosecute illegal immigrants.

O'Reilly's furor didn't let up over the weekend. He used his Monday radio and television shows to call for Oberndorf's recall. He also lobbied for the firing of police Chief Jake Jacocks Jr., who helped craft a city policy that forbids patrol officers from asking the immigration status of defendants charged with misdemeanors.

O'Reilly added a new accusation on his radio show, saying the city will "look the other way" on crimes committed by illegal immigrants because many immigrants work in the city's tourism trade.

"Virginia Beach needs the illegal alien labor to work the hotels and work the service industry," O'Reilly said. "See, this is the quid pro quo."

City officials didn't respond to O'Reilly's comments, but Oberndorf said in a statement, "I will not comment on how the media are covering this story. I believe we must put this incident behind us and allow the two families who are victims to grieve in peace and with dignity."

Oberndorf later added that when she pulled into her driveway Monday morning, she saw three or four people there. The broadcast on Monday's "The O'Reilly Factor " showed the mayor be ing interviewed as she got out of her car.

She denied that Virginia Beach is a haven for illegal immigrants but said little else. An agitated Roger Oberndorf added, "Mr. O'Reilly's been lying."

"The mayor doesn't even talk for herself," O'Reilly shot back. "Her husband talks for her.... The woman has no clue."

Oberndorf said she thinks the debate over illegal immigration is shifting attention away from "two innocent lives lost because of drinking and driving."

"It makes one wonder about the professionalism of some in the media," Oberndorf said.

  • Farewell Meyera

Props to O'Reilly for pointing a finger at Virginia beach. We've been needing somthing like this to happen for a long time. Maybe we'll have a new and improved Mayor in '08.

    mrs. mayor..and, Mr mayor?

If anyone saw or heard the factor (rightfully) questioning the mayor at her house (good for them) why did she decide to pick up the groceries from her trunk while her husband (who no one elected) answer questions for the city of va beach? I guess she doesn't feel like doing her job anymore, so, maybe she should find something else. Maybe her husband should run.

    Blame Judge Colin Whitehurst

Although Meyera deserves her share of the blame, if one person should be held responsible for the deaths of the two girls it should be Judge Colin Whitehurst who didn't sentence Ramos to jail for DUI. For not only was the illegal alien convicted of DUI, but he didn't have a drivers license or insurance! The combination of the three should have made the Judge Whitehurst sentence him to a year in jail, which he had the authority to do. I recall that Chesapeake wants to have a citizen review panel for police, maybe they should have one for judges as well.

    The Blame Game!

If we look at this logically. The blame game is the entire country. These illegals come up from Mexico and Canada scatter throughout the country. To say Virginia Beach is a sanctuary for illegals is not true. The whole country is a sanctuary for illegals. I am not a fan of the Mayor of Virginia Beach, but it is not right to take jabs at her. If she enforced this upon the police department in Va Beach, you would have another Paul Riddick crying racism and it will never end. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families that lost their daughter's. Everyone look at the two sources that were arguing (O'Reilly and Jeraldo). What should that tell you. Two clueless knuckleheads who can't stand themselves, but can't stand the military for what reason, who knows. If you want to blame someone, blame the city of Chesapeake and the mayor. This is where the entire mess started and if they would have taken action, those two young girls would be here today and the country will not be at war.

    Be Serious!

Lets take a look at the bigger picture. I am from upstate SC and it is just as bad there if not worse when it comes to illegal immagrants. The problem is all over the place and I see no action taking place. Growing up I watched the poor neighborhoods fill up with illegal immagrants as the years progressed. In order for the problem to be solved or mabye even worked on just a little, it would have to happen at a more national level. I am in the Navy and I am only 18 years old. I would be processed for seperation and mess up the rest of my life if I got an alchole related offense. This guy has had numerous ones and he was still allowed to be here, even when he was never granted permission to be here in the first place. I think that what happened was a terrible mistake and that it could have been prevented. Mabye if it were to happen to someone with more of a position of power then things might start to change. Thank you for your time and have a great day.

    Whatever!

First of all...I once worked in Va Beach in a Law Enforcement capacity and I can tell you that it would not have mattered what policy the city had regarding illegal immigrants...unless the old INS can grab 20 or 30 at a time, they aren't interested....I know because I called them numerous times for an illegal that had been arrested and they would not come get them! Second, I see a whloe lot of foplks in here bad mouthing the Mayor, yet no specifics on why. It looks like monkey see-monkey do....if you're gonna complain about the Mayor then you should have sopme ammo to back it up...so far all I see is a lot empty talk from a lot of poeple who don't even live in Va Beach!!! This is a great city, and it didn't get that way by being mis-managed by the Mayor over the last 20 years...she does a good job, sure she is not gonna make everyone happy all of the time, can you?!!!! Everyone on this forum spewing empty talk should have at least one plan to make things better if they wanna gripe!!!

    Enforcing the law.

We have 2 issues here. 1 is DUI. The second is illegal immigration. The bottom line however is if Ramos had been discovered as an illegal and deported for the crime of being here illegaly after his first alcohol arrest, then 2 young women would still be alive. What is the life of 2 young women worth in Virginia Beach? Apparently not worth deporting a criminal here illegaly. No matter your point of view, the bottom line is they would be alive if he had been deported.

    O'Reilly Show

Meyera...Do the city a favor, leave! And take Good ol' Roger with you! The city of Virginia Beach is in complete chaos with your "management skills." You don't seem to realize the root of representative is represent. Something the citizens of Virignia Beach sorely need. You've not listened to them for a long time. Remember when we had the referendum and voted against the 31st street Hilton in favor of keeping the last piece open space on the boardwalk just that open? Well, you and your co-horts on city council felt we didn't know what we wanted and gave us a piece of crap, of which the City of Virginia Beach subsidized with several millions. I'm speaking with certainty that the city will be asked to let the boys turn it into another one of there "time-share" (read ripoffs) in a few years because they "can't make the numbers work." Just do us a favor and bid farewell. Now!

    Over The Top..But I wonder..

..for O'Reilly. As much as I appreciate him bringing "US" into the spotlight..I wonder..25 years in office, homes in, "did I read Texas AND Florida"? Newark or Providence had a mayor like that once. Until somebody found a paper trail and the rest as they say..is History!

It ain't the useless Mayor's fault

It's a "we can't stop the illeagals so let's give in" attitude. "Gee, they're here and we can't stop em". How about clamping down on the employers of the illeagals. No work, they go away. Do not give me any crap about them doing jobs Americans won't do. If employers didn't hire them for half price, and were jailed for doing so, there would be plenty of Americans willing to do those jobs.

    Meyera must go!!!!!!!

Unfortunately - and I bid no ill will - it's time for her to go. During the O'Reilly-Rivera shootout, Geraldo described her as a "little old woman mayor". My, how that fits. VB it's time to take a few steps forward. You're not a one-horse town anymore and Sheriff Taylor has gone out to pasture. You need a strong mayor that looks as if he/she should be doing more than selecting "Lawn of the Month".

    Legal System to Blame

If Ramos has been previously charged with DUI's why was he not detained and deported out of the country the first time?

Obviously there were prior hints that this man was not in the US legally so someone: whether it be law enforcement officials, judges, attorneys entirely dropped the ball on this.

To place blame on the Mayor, even though she is entirely incompetent, is a bit of stretch. I think the blame falls in several hands.

    Trespassing? not!

Hey, check VA law (guess you didn't, despite what you wrote -- see Virginia Code § 18.2-119). Unless your property is posted with the necessary signs, it isn't trespassing until you ask the person to leave. Mayor (and her husband) asked, and O'Reilly's crew left. No crime committed.

Mayor and City Council Must Go!

The Va. Beach Mayor and City Council must go. Along with this illegal immigration issue and lack of DUI enforcement, I am appalled at the current state of our great city due to overdevelopment and the poor quality of life it brings. Illegal immigration laws not being enforced, a poor and crumbling infrastructure as a result of overdevelopment, sch0ols at 106% capacity, roads at 94% capacity, first responders averaging 12 minutes per emergency, no flood management plan or Flood Plain Manager as allowed by the National Flood Insurance Program to get more points for deeper discounts to businesses and private residences? Are we moving toward the DC/NoVA style cities where rapid growth is causing horribly gridlocked traffic, crime, etc.? What impact does this bear on Homeland Security and on the ability to evacuate the area in the event of an emergency? When is enough, enough? Growth is not an end to itself. We should grow with an idea as to growth's purpose and its impact.

why does it take national news attention...

...for a city to realize it has a serious problem? The person responsible for this crash has had 3 previous DUI offenses and he's an illegal immigrant. That's 4 offenses as far the law should be concerned. I know most people are wondering just why is this guy allowed to remain in the country?? I understand it's racial profiling to question a person's immigration status when pulled over, but maybe that could be part of the license search when the officer runs the license. A flag would pop up in the system so he could be taken into custody for deportation. Those girls died because of the wishy-washy stance against illegal immigrants in this country. Is it really that difficult to go through the process to remain in this country legally? O'Reilly was right to take it to Oberndorf's front yard--Va Beach needs this wake up call to be firm in protecting its citizens!

    Mayor out

Is this a life long job of mayorship hope this cause Virginia Beach to elect a younger mayor

    It's About Time

I cannot understand how everyone can be so outraged at this mayor when the city has voted her in repeatedly over the past 30 years. Look at how she has handled the growth in VB; horrible job. I mean, the streets don't even make sense. The zoning and development is awful, and this is the same leader who has been at the helm while the growth is out of control. This is the same leader who couldn't even put together a proper proposal to meet the clear instructions of the BRAC commission in regards to NAS Oceana. This is the same leader who is responsible for spending money on buying back a condo development from the developer b/c they goofed up in zoning and then realized that the US Navy and BRAC commission are serious about the encroachment issues. Why is anyone shocked? And yet, people conitnue to vote for this lady. We may be stationed back at Oceana again in a few years, and when we do, we surely won't vote for her. I encourage others to do the right thing and vote her out.

    Disgusting

This is absolutely out of hand on the part of O-Reilly and his posse. We've all heard it, it's for ratings, and why in the world do people bash their own government when they're the ones who are responsible for the vote? I simply don't get all the complaining over Oberndorf and the rest of the City Council, especially if Oberndorf's been elected Mayor since 1988.

thank you all for explaining that this is a DUI issue...

many on this board feel like they need to clarify where our angst needs to be directed. personally, i just moved from the Chicago area out to beautiful VB a few months ago. this is, indeed, a nice city. i told friends back home that VB has not been spoiled by illegals. yet. and before you feel the need to tell me that i am racist, forget about it...i've served in the military with Blacks, Whites, Latinos and Asians and firmly believe that people are people. but this invasion of illegals is turning Chicago into a lousy place to live; quality of life for my family suffered, from education to healthcare, to traffic, litter and gangs...no b.s. so when things like this tragedy with the girls getting killed by the illegal happen here in VB, it is very unsettling to me. we gotta stop it. we have to insist that our gov't enforce the laws that are in place.

    Best Bumper sticker

Two years ago, I saw the best bumper sticker in Virginia Beach- It was " Virginia Beach" Best City Council - Money can buy! Has always summed it up for us. Does anyone one know where I can buy one? We would put on our cars - Happily! That pretty much sums it all up in a nutshell for all the world to see.
    D W, Va Beach

    Oath of office

All officials take an oath before they assume their new positions. Part of that oath is to "...uphold all law as of the United States..." why doesn't the Police Chief uphold our immigration laws? He, the City Manager (his boss) and the entire city council of Va Beach should be fired or recalled for not enforcing (upholding) the laws of the Unitied Statres.

This is not about Bill O'Reilly

The public officials of Virginia Beach really need to stop reacting to Bill O'Reilly. It only makes them look foolish. This is not about him!

When the safety and security of your citizens is imperiled by lawbreakers…drunk or not…illegal or not…it is your problem.

Any public official who declares that illegal immigrants are the problem of the federal government…not the local government…when the actions of illegal immigrants affect the safety and security of its citizens... that public official needs to be removed from office.

This is not about Bill O'Reilly. It is about you.

The question is...what are you going to do about it?

    Thank You Bill!!!

I don't agree with everything you say but if it weren't for you this would be another missed-opportunity to confront this illegal Mexican invasion.

Put a stop to illegal immigrants and crime

When a crime is committed, people should be held accountable. Just because you are an illegal should not let you off the hook. Lets uphold our existing laws. Go to the poles and vote for people who can an will make a difference.

    Thank you Bill O'Reilly

    M. Oberndorf was Mayor of VA Beach as far back as 1976 that I know of and I don't know how many years before that. This must be a lifetime office for VA Bch. Bill O"Reilly keep up the good work and thanks.

    What do us voters expect?

What do us voters expect? Only 17% of us voted in the last election! You get what you vote for, and nothing will change as long as you keep doing what you're doing!!! Higher taxes and non-responsive city council members!

    Call a spade a spade

Illegal immigrants is a crime, DUI is a crime. A crime is a crime and the police (whether Virginia Beach or any other municipality) should be enforcing the law and dealing with the crime. As someone else pointed out--kidnapping is a federal crime, drug running is a federal crime--is the mayor and chief of police in Virginia Beach ignoring these crimes because it is "someone else's job"? What are our tax dollars going for? A a taxpaying citizen of Virginia Beach, I would like to know. I don't believe my tax dollars should be thrown to a lawsuit against someone that (resident or not) had the voice to bring attention to the stealth governement of this community.

    Example...

Take a drive to the south end of Sandbrige where they're building an obscene amount of condo's. A majority of workers you will see there are mexican. If they're all here legally more power to them, but I have my doubts. Since the Mayor wants a large over crowded city to bring in more tax revenue then she'll have to face the problems that come with it.

    This is a DUI issue!

O'Reilly is barking up the wrong tree... and many comments on this board are too. This is a DUI issue, not an immigration issue. Yes, there needs to be more policing, and maybe action on city council's part, but the mayor cannot be personally be blamed for this fiasco. O'Reilly is clearly out to get ratings (good luck on that), and the city is quickly becoming the victim. Plus, many of you say the mayor and police chief must go. If you don't like the way the city is run, there are many other places in the area where you can live, instead of bashing the government. Immigration is a national issue, and frankly, without immigrants, who would pick crops or build expensive hotels in the middle of the city? That you can blame that on CEO's and companies who want to do it cheap. Don't blame the mayor, she's not a contractor or federal official. Most importantly, why not support the families who lost two young girls. The underlying tragedy has been forgotten by most of you.

    Bill "O" again

Bill Orally is wrong and needs to keep his nose out of Va Beach and our politics..when are we going to realize this guy is nothing more than a "shock jock"? The Mayor should have had his producers arrested for trespassing.
