NORFOLK - Promising listeners "you can leave this arena cleansed, forgiven and on the way to heaven," evangelist Franklin Graham opened a three-night revival at Scope on Friday, capping months of organizing by local churches.
The Greater Hampton Roads Franklin Graham Festival filled at least three-quarters of the 7,500 seats available in the indoor stadium. Many who came brought an unquenchable expectation that Graham would work a wonder of mass religious conversions - as Billy Graham, his famed father, did for decades.
"A lot of people's lives are going to be changed. It's going to be mind-blowing," said Raquel Capizzi, a 19-year-old secretary from Virginia Beach. "I'm already saved. Praise the Lord!"
Eva Williams, 52, of Norfolk said she came out of respect for the Graham name and because "I'm going anywhere Jesus is." She called the festival "an opportunity to realize the Billy Graham ministry will continue" even though the preacher is retired.
Not every spectator was born-again.
"My mom asked me to come, and you can't say no to Mom on Mother's Day," said John, a 30-year-old electrician from Virginia Beach who refused to give his full name. "I am not a Christian; I'm a good guy, I do my best to live a certain way."
Franklin Graham was invited more than a year ago by local church leaders to bring his mix of preaching and contemporary Christian music to Hampton Roads, where Billy Graham last preached in 1974.

At least 561 local congregations were supporting the festival with cash, volunteers and invitations to friends to come to the revival, said festival director Sherman Barnette.
Franklin Graham, who succeeded his father as head of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, will lead festivals in Binghamton, N.Y., and Tacoma, Wash., later in the year. He also will hold revivals in Ukraine, Ecuador and South Korea.
On Friday, Graham took the stage after a 90-minute show of Christian rock, folk rock and soul-style music, backed at times by a 1,700-member choir. His preaching was boiler plate, old-time evangelical religion focused on the eternity of the soul and the prospect of heaven or hell.
Graham called the shootings at Virginia Tech an example of both the work of Satan and the tenuousness of life.
"One of these days, we're going to die, but your soul is going to live for eternity," he said. "If you died tonight, would God receive your soul?"
Faith in Jesus - "There aren't multiple roads to God," Graham said - was the constant refrain.
"I can tell you right now, Jerry was ready," Graham said, referring to the death Tuesday of evangelist Jerry Falwell. "Jerry was prepared. Jerry's in heaven."
Graham capped his preaching with an altar call, an invitation to non believers to embrace Jesus Christ.
Clambering out of the stands, scores of people trickled down the aisles to the arena floor in front of the stage.
Meeting them were volunteer counselors who shared a six-point process titled "How To Receive Christ" and copies of the Gospel of John. Counselors also took each inquirer's name and telephone number for follow-up contact.
Not every inquirer was a new convert. James Beamon, 75, of Hampton said he already belonged to a church but responded to Graham's call anyway.
"I just felt like I ought to rededicate my life to God," he said. "I feel like I've renewed my spirit."
The festival continues today with a children's program at 10:30 a.m. and a youth night program set for 7 p.m. On Sunday, the program begins at 4 p.m.

Garbage
I hope Norfolk tax payers don't have to foot the bill of there really were 10k+ people there. That's a lot of toilets flushing at once.
Shame on you Hampton Roads.com
There was a question about why so many negative comments were shown about the Franklin Graham event. Now I know why, you probably didn't print the nice ones. I wrote one about my grandson being so moved that he committed himself to Jesus. He explained why in his own words, so I knew he understood, and was genuinely influenced by this event. I mentioned that parents, such as his, need to do their job in teaching their children. You didn't print it, and surely you have enough space. Most of the posted comments, controlled by you, were negative. I guess you have shown how you feel about the event and faith issues, and want the public to reveal your opinion by only showing those which state your view. Where is the freedom of speech? Not in controlled media print when God is mentioned, obviously. What are you so afraid of? Shame on you.
Loved the FGF!!!
I was at the festival all three nights. I also was at the kidzfest with my daughter on Saturday morning.
Franklin makes no money off of this. He simply helps lead people to Christ through the Holy spirit.
This is a possitive story....why do so many knock it down?
I guess we prefer negative stories in the news.
The choir was awesome, the bands were great and most all I enjoyed seeing so many give their lives to the Lord. Only the Holy spirit could move so many...not a simple human being! The Holy spirit was present and you could feel the electricity of Him!
God Bless Franklin Graham and his legacy!
tolerance ?
Amazing. I'm told that I should be tolerant of Islam and it's beliefs. Here I watch people attack people of faith for their beliefs. Why isn't the same standards of tolerance applied? Last time I check I don't see Christians hijacking planes and flying into buildings and beheading people who don't believe as they do. I also don't see Christians dragging you into the street and stoning you for dating someone of different religious beliefs or for practicing a different religion. I hear that Christians preach hatred. For stating what they believe? That Christ is the way?
Maybe people should look into something more before they start bashing it and the people who peacefully follow it.
The world is going mad and people are calling others sheep for looking for peace and understanding in their lives. Amazing.
Come see for yourself...4pm..Scope..be there by 2:30pm to get
I just returned from the Sat night Franklin Festival. awesom!! Great bands, great info. Franklin speaks at the end for only about 15 min or so...and it is fantastic...don't miss that part either!! Looks like the family business is doing well for this guy - but does he puts on a good entertaining show for it? That's what I want to know.
Proverbs 12:1
To all the "naysayers"-I challenge your limited human wisdom by God's Word. Please read this Scripture and pray for mercy while there is time to do so. First of all, money has less to do with the actual message on and off the pulpit, but I believe even any secular (non-believing) person can admit that it takes monetary support to further any cause in this world because we are on such a system. Secondly, Martin Luther may have preached his way around the globe, but Chrisitanity and its roots did not begin with him, nor were they confirmed by him. Perhaps time is better served to do Biblical research of Jesus instead of worrying about Martin Luther on the internet. Without 'Christ', there is no Chrisitanity, and that is really what any negative comment here represents; that such attitudes are more the denial of God than of who corporally represents Christ's mission here on earth. Ignore preachers if you will and find God on your own, but just find Him!
Benny, Paula, Franklin et al
All perpetuating and exploiting mankinds single greatest obsession - religion. Absolutely incredible.
Dishonest way to hold a revival
I am a Christian but in my humble opinion that not stating up front that this is a revival and to lure people in with the names of the headliners for a concert and then be subject to a Bible-thumping-hallelujah-singing-Praise-the-Lord sermon is just out and out wrong and lying to those that are not aware before they got there. That, my friend, is considered lying in my book and that is not what my Lord stands for.
I am a Counselor at the Festival.
I am sadden to read the vitriol over a free concert and the willingness of thosands of local volunteers to reach out to others to help them find their way to God. I volunteered 5 nights in March to learn how to help those that will come forward seeking God's love. Franklin Graham does not make a dime on this free event. What those that chose to come will have is a wonderfully well organized concert and the opportunity to stick around at the end and to hear the message of the Christian faith explained in simple, easy to understand terms. Sunday night's headliner is the Charlie Daniels Band. Tonight is Third Day, a very contemporary Christian band. Jesus' message is a message of love and of peace. Jesus doesn't use the term "Infidel". While many may not want to learn that truth does exist - and truth is truth, regardless of if anyone likes it or not; the message Franklin Graham shares is simly the message found in the Bible - for those that believe, that is God's Word. Please Come.
Jesus is the answer.
Jesus is the answer to every situation. He said who ever is not for this gospel is against it. I praise anyone who delivers a living word in a lost and confused generation. I ask everyone to have an open heart and mind. and not be so critical we have enough of that in the world. Try Jesus, you have tried everything else, give him a try.
Why are all of you so threatened by this?
Almost every one of these other comments is very defensive towards this message of Christianity. Why? Do you feel threatened by it? This is not the intent at all. If there were a Marilyn Manson concert at the scope, would there be such hate put here? Probably so. Yes, I said probably so. All of us react negatively toward something if we are unfamiliar with the subject. This is real. Jesus is real. So is Satan. I don't necessarily agree with everything that is preached by human beings that claim to be preachers, evangelists, and/or teachers of "God's Word", but I do believe that Jesus died for me and I have learned how to read so I read for myself of who God is and what his son is about. I believe in Jesus' purpose not only because "the Bible tells me so", but because of the changes he's made in me as a person and a woman. I'm a much better person and have indescribable peace inside I never had before. I pray a lot, to get the right direction in what I learn from reading and hearing.
like father like son
Another money hungry mass media preacher preying on the people who have the need to believe everything will be ok and things aren't their fault but rather the design of some higher power. I think Chevy Chase said it best "I believe in a God who doesn't require heavy financing..."
A house ful of sheeple
This totally amazes me how people fall for this stuff. I think this all should be taught in school so that people would know the real truth about the history and beliefs of religion so that they can make an informed decision. How many of these people that attended know that modern day Christian beliefs are only 500 years old and started with a madman who had not even read the New Testament before he was a priest nailing his writings to church doors? Go ahead and do an internet search on quotations for Martin Luther and you will see. If salvation by faith is the only way, then what happened to all of those people before Luther came along? I have nothing against the Grahams and am sure they are wonderful people, but until we get rid of all this "our religion is the "truth"" way of thinking, they will just be adding to the chaos in the world.
miiiind
Mind Virus, spreading the Jesus disease. Brain Antivirus needed, to de-program all attendees. Heard it on the radio, they advertised no fees. But I'm sleeping in Sunday, don't beat on my door please.
Jerry???
Any club that would have Falwell as a member is not a club I wish to join. "Jerry" on 9-11
"I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way -- all of them who have tried to secularize America -- I point the finger in their face and say "you helped this happen."
Old Time Religion
There is only one way to really say it, and the Grahams hit it on target all the time. Some call it "old time religion", and it is from the Ancient of Days, I guess that is an appropriate name. Maunly though, it's all about Jesus. This is the divider and the uniter. Truly you will love Him or hate Him.
My son wears this T-shirt that says: "Jesus loves Porn Stars". Well, it's true. Regardless of what you think, do, or say, Jesus is going to love you. I think I want to believe in someone like that. It's an awesome thought for eternity.
False Prophets
The Pilots owes its readers an examination of the message that religious leaders like Graham, Falwell and Robertson deliver.
Ultimately, their message is one of hatred for non believers (infidels ) and self aggrandizement. Where is compassion and works of faith for the poor and the disadvantaged? How much of their message is about money and their own greed for power and all the trappings of material wealth?
I am a Christian
I am a Christian and I knew enought not to trust this president. This Charlatan supported the president and therefore is partially responsible for this immoral war. Let our 19 year old sons and daughters die for a farce. God will judge him in the afterlife. My faith in a righteous God allows me to know that this blasphemer will get his due.
