Virginia Tech picked up its second commitment from a South Hampton Roads football player in as many days on Thursday when First Colonial's Tony Gregory joined the Hokies' latest recruiting class.

The commitment from Gregory, a 6-foot, 180-pound running back, came one day after Salem linebacker Lyndell Gibson said he was headed to Blacksburg. Gregory also considered Maryland, Marshall, Akron and Northern Illinois before deciding on Virginia Tech.

"They've been showing me love since the beginning and they have a great coaching staff," Gregory said.

Gregory is the Hokies' ninth recruit from the class of 2008, and their fourth commitment in the past week.

Gregory was a second-team All-Beach District pick after rushing for 940 yards and nine touchdowns last season as a junior. He also scored on kick returns of 89 and 85 yards.

This offseason Gregory has sped up recruiting charts with some impressive outings, including a 4.36-second 40-yard dash at the Beach District combine.

"I think I've opened some people's eyes with my speed," Gregory said. "I've been working hard and been in the weight room and running track to keep in condition."
