WASHINGTON

Virginia Sen. Jim Webb stepped into a politically charged spat between the White House and the top Democratic presidential contender on Monday, joining a group of senators seeking a committee hearing on Pentagon planning for a possible withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq.

Webb's office announced that the freshman lawmaker has co-signed a letter to Senate Armed Services Committee chairman Carl Levin, D-Mich. requesting the hearing.

"The roots of the many problems facing our men and women serving in Iraq were planted by the failure of this Administration to develop sound, realistic plans," the letter asserts. "We cannot afford to repeat the same mistake when our forces redeploy."

The letter grows out of complaints by Eric Edelman, undersecretary of defense for policy, that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., the Democrats' leading presidential candidate, has emboldened U.S. enemies in Iraq by seeking a Pentagon briefing on a possible withdrawal.

The letter signed by Webb, Clinton and Sens. Evan Bayh, D-Ind., and Robert C. Byrd, D-W.Va., dismisses Edelman's argument as "spurious."

Clinton and other Democrats aren't the only members of Congress pressing for more planning for a withdrawal. Virginia's other senator, Republican John Warner, is co-author of legislation calling on the military to develop plans for a troop redeployment that could begin as soon as the end of this year. Warner's proposal stalled on the Senate floor last week.

Eric Edelman

couldn't be more wrong. Senator Clinton has done no such thing, and speaking the truth about Bush and this illegal war don't merit any charges by him. Demo'crap Governor? Well, Robert W. you still have the Repuke, Thelma Drake, so don't despair. George Bush isn't loosing touch with reality, the man lost it years ago and people are being wounded and slaughtered as a results. I pray the day will come when he is locked up in jail and Cheney as his cell mate.

Troops in Iraq

President Bush stated the US should stay in Iraq to keep Al Qaeda from inading the US. Well, there was no Al Qaeda in iraq until the us invaded! If there is a US threat from Al Qaeda it is President Bush's fault. Bush's invasion inflamed civil war in Iraq, destruction of a once prosperpous nation and more 'terrorism' around the globe. Bush and his extremist cronies have created a modern day 21 Century holocaust in Iraq where millions have disappeard or been displaced. Congratulations America! You have held true to your Manifest Destiny. Sieg Heil! White Power!

From reading this page of dribble..

..it is easy to see why the poor State of Virginia has a Demo'crap for a Governor.......

Losing touch with Reality?

It has become clear that the poor president of the USA is becoming impaired and unfocused and not in touch with reality. After his speech that this should be a dictatorship and him being the only dictator so no one could go against him..he really has become a serious problem. No one is above the law..including the president, no matter how much he wants to dictate which he has been trying ever since his second election..wanting this country to be a dictatorship shows how far in his mind he has gone..is he becoming a handicap instead of an asset to this country? Whenever someone says something he does not like, he hollers..Terrorism!!..little boy blue hollered "wolf" so many times, he became a joke just as the presidents "al-Qaeda" has!

Chain of command........

The chain of command with Bush as the commander is in serious trouble and our troops are caught in the middle. The Commander and Chief is a falure, a liar, and has lost all reasoning about the war in Iraq. There is no stragedy! We listen to Bush sing the same song over and over that "Al queda will attack us here if we don't destroy them there". What Bush doesn't want to face is Al queda wasn't a probelm in Iraq until his war of lies started. When the war topic gets to hot for Bush we here, "gut feeling about attacks". It's all a sad and serious game for this administration. Jim Webb and ANY elected official that goes after Bush has my full support. I say, take Bush's power away the man is mentally impaired, and killing our troops.

Why are we afraid to have discussion about our policies?

I have been around for many years and I remember well the Vietnam era. The arguements that many people make that we are currently offering comfort and embolding our ememies by questioning our policy are the same arguements I heard as a young man in the late 60's. I hear that if we don't fight them in Iraq , we will fight them here in the US. I heard the same thing during the Vietnam War era. We were told if we did not stop Communism over there then it would come to our shores.Lets have an open discussion about our policies...Lets fully understand the plans. It was only after many years of open discussion that we finalized what we were doing or better said ,not doing ,in Vietnam. Keep it up Sen. Webb!!!!

Democrat Webb

Send in the Clowns!

Simply put...

Simply put, way to go Jim!

He's looked at congressional interference from both sides

Funny how this guy is a hero of the illiterati, who apparently haven't (or can't)read his previous position written in strategic review publications, that congressional interference in military timetables endangers the troops.I guess a guy who can 'despise' the Clintons one day and lick boots with the best of them the next can twirl like a top on the issues with no ill will,or any notice by his drones. With apologies to Judy Collins,'He's looked at posturing from both sides now, from in and out,and still somehow,it's Jim's illusions that entrall, you really don't know Webb,at all.'

Funny

Webb is willing to walk the talk and get's attacked by those who obviously do not vote Dem even if the canidate were to walk on water. I have yet to see a valid reason for the attacks. Those who tout partisanship seem to be those displaying it the most. Va has a large number of troops. It does appear as though he is representing them well.

I am tickled pink...

... to see Jim Webb give 'em hell in Washington. At least we are hearing a lot about and from the new junior Senator from Virginia..... George Allen typically kept most Virginians on the "mushroom farm" (in the dark and covered with you-know-what). I must agree with the late President Gerald Ford that the Republicans have swung way too far to the right on too many issues. Today's White House makes the Ford administration look like the moderate Democrats we saw last night in the first official Democratic Presidential Debate.

Webb in latest fray over White House policy on troops in Iraq

I think this is wonderful. Between Webb and that "Socialist" Senator we have in Wisconsin, Feingold, perhaps we can start sending maps with deployment areas and withdrawal routes so that the terrorists, like al Queada can know when, where, and how the United States plans the surrender of Iraq. I sure hope Webb, hero that he is, is standing at the "crossroads" waving the troops out of the Iraqi capital with his little white flag. Maybe he can stick around to help take care of the thousands who will be butchered when we leave.

lil' webb continued

General Webb grimaces, checks his hair, checks the polls, checks hair again, shows off his boots, then snarls. We are indeed lucky to have such a statesman. Who is more worthy of sarcasm and ridicule? Webb or Senator Byrd of WV? Thank you, General Webb, for lowering morale of troops engaged in the field with your constant backbiting of the Chain of Command. Shut your pie-hole and let our guys win this thing. Losing a war does not build character, but men who were in Vietnam like you, Hagel, Kerry, and Murtha seem to think it does.

Thank God when Webb is Gone

Keep him in Va and out of national politics. We have enough Dem Turkeys like him and can do without his kind

Senator Jim Webb

This president has the unique ability to convert Republicans to Democrats with his misguided, cowboy approach to foreign policy. This war is not part of the "worldwide war on terror." Bush created the insurgency in Iraq by invading. As Amy and Erik wrote, if he had assigned only half the number of troops that have died in Iraq to finding bin Laden, he'd be dead by now. We cannot continue trying to force democracy down the throats of people who aren't interested. I served just before Vietnam heated up and can't believe we're making the same mistakes all over again. God bless our troops but let's bring them home as soon as possible. I'm a conservative Republican but Jim Webb is one of my heroes.

A Good Politician? A Good Job? Yeah right!

Come on people...

A good politician, one who can go to bat for his constituents and get things done, is not one who constantly goes around looking for a fight. I knew we were going to have trouble with Webb when his campaign slogan was "Born Fighting." This attitude and political outlook shows Webb to be a political novice that will only hurt Virginia. In a time in which the nation seems more divided than ever, we need politicians that will "fight" for unity. We need a Senator who will strive to do what is best for the entire state, not just those of his party. With Webb all we get is partisanship, and with partisanship nothing will ever get done for Virginia. Only one question remains...when will Webb grow up politically?

Please Lord, send us more Senators like Jim Webb!

Senator Webb is doing what most of his constituents want him to do. I pity the people who are so brainwashed they can't or won't see the disaster that this administration has created. Even tough guys like Robert Gates, Sec.of Defense, choke up when they think about the needless dying of heros like Marine commander D.Zembiec,a/k/a the "Lion of Falluja"! As long as Senators like Jim Webb and a few others are fighting for our troops speedy return, there is hope that this senseless dying and maiming of our military men and women will end soon. How can you Bush loyalists not be ashamed of yourself, knowing the "Leaders" of Iraq go on vacation next month to escape the heat and mayhem, while our troops are going through hell every single day!!!!

Here's an idea

Those of you who support this war strap on some combat boots and take your happy high horse riding selves over there and then see how much you approve of this war. There is a great part of Virginia that is mostly military so I would say that Webb is looking out for the interest of Virginia. If we took all the manpower wasted in Iraq and centered it on finding and eliminating Osama Bin Laden, I'd be willing to bet that he'd be found and hanged by now. Bush was just using his "war on terror" as a jumping stone to go into Iraq for no reason!!!!!! From the moment that man was elected I knew he'd find a way into Iraq to "avenge" his poor old dad.

Webb works for Virginia and our troops

Strange how the right wing apologists don't seem to mention any legislation initiated by Allen supporting our troops.

Puhleez! Give the troops what they need...

Answer: A new Commander in Chief. This region has been religiously and politically charged for 2000 years. Its time for folks to wake up to the fact that we cannot drop a bunch of troops into a sovereign country no matter how much we detest its leader, force democracy down the throats of a largely theocratic society, and not help but to paint a bigger bullseye on ourselves. Let's focus our attention on the 300 million people here in America and let the rest of the world take care of itself.

VA is really suffering now.

We have two embarrassments as our reps in the US Senate. One who is clearly old, complacent, and senile. The other who is just a flat out lunatic who subscribes to the one set of laws for him and another set of laws for the rest of us. Not to mention dissing the veterans, insulting the President and proofing to us right from the get go just how bad a mistake we made by let ourselves being led around by the nose by the liberal press pushing the "maccaca" crap. We're stuck for a while but lets hope for the best and continue to support our troops and then vote all these idiots out the next election.

Thank god for Jim Webb!!!!!!!!!!!

What do you mean Jim Webb doesn't want to help the state of Va.? You dont think there are men and women from the state of Va. who are serving in Iraq?Well my Marine son who was born and raised in Va. is one of them who has served in Iraq. I just wish Thelma Drake and John Warner had half the guts that Jim Webb has to stand up to President Bush and this administration and do what is right for our troops and bring them home.

Sen. Webb keeps proving he is the right man for the job

If you believe the Democrats are "socialists" or "patsies" and you want the Iraq war to continue, please, by all means vote republican in 2008. That is the party looking to expand this futile war. That is the party supported by people like Todd and Alan. If you want an end to this war; if you are tired of paranoid fantasies about socialists and the endless attempts to divide us, you must vote Democrat. You must put more men like Sen. Webb in office in order to reverse the country's disastrous course. The next time you vote, pretend you are voting for people like Todd and Alan. Do they represent your vision of America? I will vote for honorable men like Sen. Webb, who has served and sacrificed for his country, unlike president bush.

Not a Virginian

So Webb is more in to his political agenda than he is supporting Virginia. Who elected him? I sure did not, and now I further understand why. He does not care to further or help Virginia, he is just a patsy for the DNC and Reid. What a waste of a Virginia Senator.

Puhleez!

Whether the letter about Clinton was "spurious" or not, it is an opinion of Edelman. This is typical of what the Dems stand for, if you don't agree with them then they come in with some government regulation to quiet you. They are not about free speech unless it praises them. The Democrat Party has turned so far left that they are looking more like a Socialist Party of the Soviet Union. I want the troops home as much as anyone else, but, whatever mistakes were made were made. It is now time to shut up, give the troops what they need to suppress the enemy, turn the country over to the Iraqi's, and then come home. They can't do it if the know that there country is not behind them, especially the leaders who voted to send them there. Remember.
