Vick's sentence depends on his level of cooperation

Michael Vick faced little chance of defeating the federal government had he chosen to take his dogfighting case to trial, and now, after deciding to plead guilty, he may help authorities take down other dogfighting rings, legal experts say.

As part of his plea deal, Vick will be debriefed by federal and state investigators. The level of his cooperation could take time off his prison term, the experts say.

Norfolk defense attorney Hunter W. Sims Jr., a former federal prosecutor, said the authorities will be expecting a lot from Vick and three co-defendants who already have pleaded guilty.

"He's going to have to list

everybody," Sims said. "They're looking for anyone else with star status or name recognition."

Vick, the 27-year-old Newport News native and Atlanta Falcons star, has agreed to plead guilty to a felony conspiracy charge on Monday in federal court in Richmond. He is expected to admit that he financed and participated in a dogfighting ring based at his Surry County property.

Prosecutors will be seeking a prison term of at least one year, but the final decision rests with U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson.

Had he chosen to go to trial, Vick would have been up against a U.S. Attorney's Office that had a 92 percent conviction rate last year in cases heard by juries. Had he not accepted the plea deal, prosecutors said they would have indicted Vick on more serious charges that would have carried a stiffer prison term.

"The bottom line is, he can deal with a year to 18 months," Sims said. "If he goes away for four or five years, that's a whole different kettle of fish."

By pleading guilty, Vick will be in a better position to repair his reputation and his future, the experts said.

"Your cooperation has to lead to something like an arrest or conviction, in most cases, to justify" a cut in the sentence, said Barry Boss, a federal defense attorney in Washington who has served on a U.S. Sentencing Commission advisory panel.

Vick also could help himself by teaming with an animal welfare group, performing public service announcements against dogfighting and donating money to related charities, all options Vick's lawyers say they are considering.

"That could look good to a judge. It's limited only by the imagination of his lawyers," said Virginia Beach lawyer and legal analyst L. Steven Emmert.

"He probably will, with the guidance of his counsel, be able to paint a much more favorable impression than what's in the media right now," Emmert said.

John Goodwin, who runs the animal cruelty campaign for The Humane Society, hopes the cooperation of Vick and his co-defendants will lead to prosecutions of other dogfighting operations.

"He'll have to pony up information," Goodwin said.

The exposure of the Vick case has already led to significant leads and arrests in unrelated cases, he said.

"We are definitely getting a good number of calls from constituents and citizens in the community reporting signs of dogfighting," Goodwin said. "We're also seeing more dogfighting arrests."

Here Come Da Judge

Judge Hudson is the most sternist judge in the Richmond Fed District Courts and because there has been a plea agreement does not mean the judge has to agree with the agreements between the clients lawyers and the prosecutors.Judge Hudson can award the maximum sentences allowed and he has the final word on just what sentence will be awarded by him and because the criminals have pleaded guilty whatever sentence he gives Cannot be appealed.MV and criminal associates should standby as I do not believe the judge is only going to be giving 12 to 18 months sentences and the fines will probably be the max allowed. The judge has the final say and MV and associates should get ready to play football in a Fed Pen with guards as referees.Enjoy the food.

Better use of his millions

I, for one, am tired of the Vick brothers. Marcus pulls a gun on a person at McDonalds and he gets his hands slapped. He was thrown off the football team after all his troubles. I don't know how many remember, but Michael was going to have a talk with Marcus to straighten him out. This during the time Michael is running a gambling operation in the city of Suffolk. Michael now comes out with a plea bargain when they have the information they need to find him guilty. I will be surprised if he ever serves a day in jail. People say we are picking on poor ole Michael. Poor Michael!! If he and others like him (i.e. Lohan, Hilton, Spears, etc) were spending more time and money giving back to their communities they would be better off today

Bad business

I just read that Vick's plea agreement does not include his gambling on the dogs. Do I understand this right? Am I missing something? Vick admits to giving his three buddies money to bet on the dogs and if their dogs won, his buddies got to keep the proceeds? And Vick would just bask in the fact that he has the baddest dogs? And he would not get a DIME from that action? He's either lying or dumb. And at this point, I don't know what's worse. Did the U.S. Attorneys bother to read over the agreement or did they just let Vick's attorneys write it up?

Unbelievable!

Michael Vick may be guilty of most of these crimes he is being accused of but there are many hypocrites out there who want to look the other way when it comes to things such as hunters who abandon their dogs and shoots them when their usefulness over. PETA has some nerve to protest after their little embarrassment in the dumpsters in NC. I know that Michael has done many good things also which many of you tend to forget about. I know that I appreciate the the fundraiser he sponsored for my nephew Seneca. I see many of the same posters up here who deemed his life less valuable than these dogs that were killed. It didn't matter that he was shot 6 times because it was his fault. At least Michael had compassion unlike some of you. I love dogs 2

what a joke

our justice system let us down again, the only reason vic whent for the deal is there were four other defendents that were going to tell the whole truth about vic, lawyers ( what a joke ), if the nfl doesn't ban him for life then theres no justice there either and what about the state of va, there proberly be no justice there either, don't you just love lawyers and judges, makes me sick!!!!

If Lindsay Lohan

lived in Hampton Roads then I'm sure her story would be all over our local news. John B, yes Lohan commited a crime and yes she should be punished, but she didn't kill anyone not even a dog. Sorry you can't see the difference. Back to Vick: Will the State prosecute Vick? If Vick is allow back in the NFL then I will be more than disappointed in our sports "authorties". The man belongs in jail and I still say the 50 + dogs should not be killed, but be the financial responsibility of Vick, under court supervision, in a protected envoroment for the rest of their natural lives and live the life of luxury. I don't care if they lock Vick away and throw away the key.

Just pray...

We can just pray that the judge does not accept the plea deal and sends the case to trial. Vick is a joke as is the whole national sports community. They get off with whatever because they are "sorry". Right...

My thoughts

First of all, the life of an animal cannot be compared with the life of a human. That being said, I do not condone dog fighting or mistreatment of animals, However, to place them on the same footing as a human is just plain wrong. If animals were comparable to humans it would be wrong for us to practice euthanasia an animal, something I am guilty of. However we see it as fine for someone to go into a boxing ring and beat some other guy to a bloody pulp. Personally I don't believe a thing these "friends" have to say and if the feds had such great charges against Vick and wanted to make an example of him, they never would have offered a Plea Bargain in the first place. These are just my thoughts.

It's not about a Football star

This story is not about a football star. It's a story about sick people that wanted breed a national champion killer dog. I goes back to the mentality of those involved. They grew up watching dog fights. They, including Vick, believed that dog fights were as normal as you watching a NASCAR race. With Vick's money, it was a chance to brag in a sick circle of people, that they had the baddest dog. It's not a black or white thing. It's a sick people thing.

Double Standard

Really, the legal double standard in this and other cases is what is toughest to believe. Many of you who have commented on this board are asking that the most stringent available penalty be imposed on MV. Yet, none of you have spoken nearly as vehemently about Lindsay Lohan - who (according to the reports) was breathalyzed over the limit, arrested twice - once with a police chase, and found in possession of cocaine both times. She was facing ALL felony charges, yet the DA says there's a "strong possiblity" that she'll only see misdemeanor charges and do a minimum of four days in jail? Is that what we call justice? J. Frost, you said (paraphrasing) "a law is a law". So why isn't MADD protesting Lohan? "With Liberty and Justice for ALL."

Who's Bad Newz now Mike?

Just goes to show the apple doesnt fall from the tree,
Little brother acted just like big brother.
Just because you can run a football puts you above the law?? Thanks for all the Police overtime to serch property of drug dealers/Dog killers and more crime. Who payed for that? Thanks for being a role model.
Thanks Ron Mexico or Mike Vick or buba whatever...
You have been telling lies for along time! Give a man enough rope and he'll hang himself. Way to represent.
Go Hokies

1 Down, how many more to go??

Now that we've sacked vick, lets go after all those who "hunt" for game & sport! and what about fishing?? who's to say those activities aren't inhumane??? killing is killing right?

Again everyone loses sight

Why does it matter if he is a celebrity and in the media? IT's because MV chose to be. He's the one who chose to be a "role model" and a celebrity. He's the one who made the choice of commiting a felony. The fact that he's in the public eye only worsens this. People looked up to him and he let them down. It absolutely has to be in the media. Would you want your children to emulate this man knowing his actions? I think not. Race, age, sex, height...none of these are relevant to what he did. Let's stop making excuses why everyone should go easy on him and start realizing that he tortured and killed. The ramifications are what they are. The sad part is in a year or 2 everyone will have forgotten all about this.

His Cooperation!

He can start cooperating by making a public apology for his actions and as a killer of dogs, and not through his attorney. Including an apology for his lies to the public, his so called fans and the NFL. Second, he should cooperate and take care of those 50 plus dogs that are about to be put to death because of his stupidy as a human being. He should be required by law to financially provide for all their needs for the rest of their natural lives not killed. Cooperations? What the hell has he cooperated about? Nothing!

Finally get over it and let the courts decide

Yes it was awful what him and his partners did to those dogs, however there are and have been dog fights going on in this area for years. Since he is a celeb, he is going to be in the press for ever for this. There are more celebs doing horrible things and getting off. Paris, if she had killed someone then she too would be in the press forever. MV should be made to make contributions, public service announcements and a whole lot more for what he has done. But keep this in mind, for the names he gives there might be retribution on him and is family. For safety whatever he decides it should not be placed in the newspaper. Now we know about him and for the others keep it between him, God and the authorities. Eventually he will pay some way.

He isn't worth it

Michael Vick isn't worth the time of day - he does a disservice to VA Tech - shame on schools for rewarding athletics over knowledge - I don't care if he went to Harvard - you can't take the street out of him or anyone else like him. Mr. Vicks actions are nothing but greed and feeling above the law just like the rest of these so called stars - I do not admire any of them - they are not an asset to this country or society - they are what's wrong with this country - What we need to do is do the banning - do not buy his products, attend games he plays etc - even if the NFL forgives him - they don't care about him - they are looking at the bottom line dollarwise - he's a commodity - if he'll make them money they will take him back.

Lest we forget!

Remember last month when Michael was telling everyone that he was innocent, when he lied to the NFL, his team mates and all of his fans? Lets not forget that the only reason he is playing lets make a deal is because everyone bailed on him, not because he is the least bit sorry! Now because he has money it's about fabricating some picture about how sorry he is. The NFL absolutley needs to set the bar high and suspend him for life. Then players like Pacman Jones and all the rest of them will know in no uncertain terms what they stand to loose when they choose to do the crime. Choose being the key word here.

Respect for life

Responding to Neoma - what makes you think Vick has respect for any form of life - be it human or animal? He didn't just cause dogs to fight, he also killed them when they lost. Killed them cruelly and painfully. I believe that anyone who would do what he did to an animal would just as soon do it to a human - he obviously has no conscience. This was a young man who had opportunities that not many young people have and he has wasted them. I certainly hope the NFL does not allow him back after he serves his sentence. He's had his chance - good thing most of us don't think like him - we'd just electrocute him and be done with it!

Okay, Time For Everyone To Take A Deep Breath!

What Mike Vick did is wrong and I imagine no one knows that more that he does. We have all done things we wish we hadn't and most of us didn't have to face the entire world's angst. Of course dog fighting is horrible and the people who do it should be punished; but, they shouldn't have to forfeit their lives and professional careers, in my humble opinion. If Vick can assist rounding up more names enjoying this vile "sport" terrific. Then let the man pay for his crime,(community service announcements perhaps), hopefully learn from his mistakes, and move on. Personally I would rather see him playing football than rotting in a prison. Why is boxing and other bloody sports allowed in this country anyway? Let's erase all violent entertainment!

Oh the Irony!

By Michael Vick's rationale towards his fighting dogs, his hanging, electrocution, or drowning is justifiable by the Atlanta Falcon's owner based on his dissappointing performance to the Atlanta Falcons under his $170 million contract. Thank goodness justice isn't an eye for an eye, right Michael Vick?

Whatever

This a shame, not only is he facing 18 month but he might get the possibilty of playing football agagin? Look a Pete Rose who lost any eligibilty of being put into the Baseball hall of fame? I know that that is baseball but give me a break!!! Micheal Vick will have everything handed to him on a silver platter like nothing ever happend, what kind of prison time are his Co-Defendents looking at? the max time? this is so sad to see. I hope that his co-defendents just let him have it. And not facing State Charges what's up with that?

It is enough for now...

Come on people...leave the man alone....He did the same thing that others have been doing for years. The only difference is that he is famous and he got caught. Like the article said there are plenty of people who have been caught doing the same thing but you don't see the newspaper writing about them or all of the nations TV stations all up in their faces. Again, here we are talking about someone that has made it better not just for himself but everybody in his family. Michael has been doing things for his community and the kids that live in it...but all everyone can look at is the one bad thing that he has done. So, now we are God and can condemn someone because they fell short of good judgement. Just let him be and go on living his life.

The Race Card-again

I was wondering when the race card was going to be played-Why is it that there are those who seem to insist on a different standard be applied to blacks on all things except where obeying the law is concerned?"People are acting as though he killed someone or something".
He did kill something-he heniously killed dogs in a cruel, barbaric manner and comparing killing a defenseless animal to a human is a red herring-Vick lied, he broke the rules of the NFL and he broke the law. Just becasue he is a black man, plays football and oh yea, he lied to his fans, too, does that somehow give him special consideration?
No, it does not. The only smart thing Vick has done was take the plea-now take the punishment-like a man would.

In Response to "Wow"

Yes, he did kill something- a dog. Not just 1, but probably acouple hundred.

Paris Hilton didnt get off the hook- she went to jail!

And lastly, he lied to his bosses, the NFL, the whole country, forgot to to pay taxes on this money hes collected from fighting dogs=tax evasion.

MV hasnt learned his lesson- not until hes been truly punished! Money cant buy everything!

And before the criticism starts on animal rights activists- think about what animals do for you- they protect you from intruders, bombs, drugs, crime in general. Think of all the things animals are used for- that people cant do.

They have the brains of a 3yr old, and they are extremely loyal.

And very lastly, Dogs Are People Too!

A sad example of a high paid football player, and a dog killer

This man has committed a heinous crime, and should pay for it through community services at animal shelters.....maybe he will see how evil he is when it comes to helpless animals.
I have lost all respect for him, and his associates who participated in these terrifible crimes against animals.
I pray he doesn't sweet talk his way out of this, and hopefully they will not keep such a person on their team.

Diary of a Madder Black Woman

What's the matter with you people who cry because Michael is black or because he didn't kill nobody? I'm tired of trying to teach my children to stay on the right side of the law and have good moral values when everybody keeps crying about being black. Well I'm black and my children are black and my husband, God rest his soul, is black and he never hurt no dogs and then cried "Oh I'm so black!" He was a decorated soldier, he spent his time on a ship defending his country or at home loving his family and now I have to teach my kids what's right on my own and their role models keep letting me down. A real black man who cared about his race, he would be setting a better example for the rest, not crying because he got caught. Shame on you!

A plea

To understand the severity of Vick's crimes, please go back and read the indictment. Vick is personally responsible for the deaths of several dogs, not just dogfighting. If you are not disturbed by the allegations that he has confessed to ( after lying to the NFL, investigators and the public) then something is wrong. As a convicted felon, he should be banned from the NFL, never to reap the benefits of money and fame again. Look what he did with it the first time. The only silver lining to this whole ordeal is the exposure of dogfighting rings across the country and ultimately the consequences those involved should, and will, suffer. Animal cruelty is not entertainment... it is a crime.

Michael Vick

Dog fighting will never stop as long as people can get away with it. A case as big as this is being reduced to the extream. Police continue to make arrest and usually the charge is dismissed by the DA. In memory of Pete, my dog who was killed by a Pit trained to fight.

Making this about race isnt right

Im sorry I have to disagree that this has anything to do with Mr. Vick being black. Oh and by the way he did "kill someone or something" he killed dogs. I think people need to check the facts before they go on posting things about everyone being racist and so on and so forth. And I can not stand Paris Hilton she is a horrible role model to todays youth but she actually spent more time in jail for a dui than most people do. Dogfighting is against the law and people should be punished for doing something that is illegal. pay the fine lesson learned....thats funny. how many people do you see get speeding tickets everyday and pay the fine and turn around and have one the next week. the nfl needs to kick him out then he will learn a lesson.
