A sheriff's deputy from Camden County, N.C. was hit by a car while setting out orange cones on U.S. 17 at the border with Chesapeake for a traffic safety checkpoint Thursday morning.

The deputy, who was not identified, was airlifted to a hospital and is expected to recover from his injuries, police at the checkpoint said.

The crash, they said, served to illustrate the checkpoint's goal of reminding motorists to drive safely as Labor Day weekend approaches. The annual checkpoint, called Border to Border, is one of several programs under Smart Safe & Sober, a partnership of law enforcement agencies and associations, the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles and Drive Smart Virginia.

"This really is about getting the message out before people really start to travel," said Mary Ann Rayment, with The Virginia Highway Safety Office, part of the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Chesapeake police, the DMV and officers from Virginia Beach and Portsmouth stopped vehicles from sedans to tractor-trailers for several hours Thursday on the Chesapeake side of U.S. 17 looking for violations and stopping speeders.

The officers arrested one person who was wanted on a warrant for burglary, charged another person with a felony and one with a misdemeanor, according to Chesapeake police. Nearly 100 people were issued tickets for various offenses that included speeding, driving without a license or registration or having defective equipment. One person got a ticket for having marijuana.

One commercial vehicle was ordered off the road and the driver of a commercial vehicle that was overweight got a ticket, according to Chesapeake police. Officers also issued $387 in fines.

  • Apparently someone has been pulled one to many times

Its good that they do that.Besides I followed a lifted truck with tags that ran out in Jan. of 07,on Thursday, and handicapped at that.Is that person above the law?I have to keep my vehicle up to date,so should everyone else!If you can't keep up with maintenance, park it!I don't want some smoke making, squeaking brake piece of junk hitting my car. There should be a number that you can call and report expired tags so they can be removed from the car and not put back on until they pay up.I don't like paying for it either, but at least the car is safe for me and everyone around me.And don't say you did not know because they send you a reminder that your tags will be running out in more than enough time to renew.

    Yes its about safety......

I guess you won't feel so cavalier about vehicle safety when that overloaded truck with bad brakes or driver with suspended driving privileges hits you with their vehicle?

    Safety Check Point?

This is all about money. "Serve and protect "? Revenue and collect is more like it. It just really distresses me that this hero was ran over. However will I be able to sleep tonight. But the deputy is expected to make a full recovery, to once again detain and harass innocent citizens trying to go about their personal business. Hey cops, if we need you we'll call you, until then- butt out.
