The president’s announcement of the withdrawal of 30,000 troops from Iraq is nothing more than mathematical “Kabuki,” Sen. Jim Webb said Thursday.
“That’s basically the number they put in on the surge, and it’s a reality that they have to withdraw them because of the availability of troops,” he told members of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce and the Central Business District Association of Virginia Beach .
“The true test of whether this is going to work is a year from now, if we still have 131,000 troops in Iraq, I will believe we have failed,” he said.
Iraq and war-related topics dominated the senator’s nearly hour long remarks to the business groups.
“I think people in Virginia, at this point in my tenure, tend to think mostly about what has been going on with respect to Iraq,” he said. “But what I’d like to do is take a step back and talk a little bit about how we formed our staff, the other issues that we’ve been attempting to focus on and then my reactions to what’s been happening over the past couple of weeks.”
The other issues Webb briefly addressed included crime and health care.
“We shaped our staff toward ... a couple of areas I’ve come to call our 'trajectory issues’ in this country,” the senator said. “Issues that are very difficult to solve with one piece of legislation, or even in one legislative session.”
He said the breakdown of the criminal justice system is one of those issues, as is health care, which he called “almost unsolvable.”
The first-term Democrat also touted his relationship with Republican Sen. John Warner. “We sat down and worked out a formula where we could cooperate on issues instead of argue about issues,” Webb said.
“We will continue to work with him until his successor is sworn in, whoever that may be,” the senator said, with a slight smile. “I hope we can have the same kind of relationship, and I’m rather optimistic that we’re going to. ”

Hooray!
for Senator Webb! That's why I voted for him. He calls it like he sees it, he's not afraid to say something unpopular or against the prevailing opinion and he stands up to the President -- over and over again. Calling this a sham is kind. Getting us back to "pre-surge" levels? That's a troop withdrawal??? More smoke and mirrors like we've been getting since 2003.
Jim Webb. What a joke.
He spouse's moderation in the political theater but is really a left wing liberal that supports Hillary Clinton. Mr. Webb supports moveon.org through his silence in trashing an American General. He has been nothing but an embarrassment to the State of Virginia since being elected. Through his lack of respect for the office of the Presidency to bringing firearms on capital hill, (Oh yeah, he had his flunky take the rap). He is destined to be a one term Senator. I am ashamed he represents Virginia.
Do not be fooled twice Virginia, we do not need another Jim Webb in the Senate.
Webb has credibility here
Back in 2002, when the invasion of Iraq was lurking on the horizon, Jim Webb courageously spoke out and identified it as a strategic blunder. So it and the occupation which followed have turned out to be. Meanwhile, bin Laden and his thugs, the perpetrators of 9/11/2001, remain free to taunt us and remind us that the job of bringing them to justice wasn't completed in Afghanistan back in 2001-2002 when it likely could have been. Senator Webb is the type of moderate, pragmatic centrist that both parties need to move beyond infighting and get long-overdue work done. Senator John Warner will be much missed for the same reasons. But Mark Warner, who bridged political gaps as governor to move Virginia forward, would be a worthy successor.
The Democratic Play Book
It's very predictable: for months the Democrats have been saying "just wait until Sep when we get the real story from the General", then we get the news, but wait, it's not all bad. Therefore, the Dems bash the General and call the recent update false lies. Now, faced with the possibility of success they want to change to story from Iraq to health care and crime. It's a tough position for them to be in, granted. They are very invested in defeat for their political gain. How sad for this country. We are the greatest Country in the world, but yet lack the political will to support the President and the troops to be Victorious. Go USA!!
Tie a yellow ribbon on the back of your SUV and then watch the
It is clear by now, that the right wing chicken hawks will do anything for their party and to heck with the troops. Oh, they will place an American flag on there left lapel, slap a yellow ribbon on the back of their SUV, go around flapping their jaws about how they have super high moral family values and how they support the troops. And then watch the sociopath we have for a president slaughter thousands in his own private war. The buffoon and self proclaimed "Decider" this Moron that is despised by the entire world except for his political base that would not dare raise taxes one stinking cent for the troops needed body armor. Of course they will attack Senator Webb. He is a true soldier! Now the rightwingers want to use the troops as pawn
Senators Jim Webb, Barack Obama, Thank you!
George W. Bush, our utterly incompetent, delusional and oh so pathetic puppet of a President is listing to his "General". Yep, forget the wishes of the people and the majority in Congress, it's "the General", get it?? Men like Senators Webb and Obama are what America desperately needs. They are intelligent, articulate and true Patriots. They respect and value the lives of our troops. Both Senators, like many of us, knew that Bush and his "evil cabal" were misleading, "spinning" and lying about Iraq's involvement in 9/11 and their possession of WMD'S! The illegal, criminal invasion of Iraq has failed! It's late, very late, but let's begin to bring our troops home, n-o-w!!!!
Jim Webb deserves our attention and respect
However, he's signed on to the same thought process as those who have some magical number, created in a focus group, as to how many troops should be in Iraq just prior to the 2008 Presidential election. That coincidence isn't lost on some of us, Jim. And, if a Democrat wins in 2008, then the Democrats worst fears will be realized. Iraq will be their war--retreat and surrender will be their decision, as will the potentially dire consequences that follow. Jim should know better from his Vietnam days. Just as Rumsfeld and Powell should have. But it's too late for that now. So man up, Jim. Rather than whine about Kabuki games, tell us how you'd fix this mess we're in. Don't just tell us, do something about it. That's your job, right?
What plan?
bush minor couldn't find his butt with a map. The guy is so dumb he makes the blue collar jerks who vote for him look bright. The only plan he has is to slink out of office and leave this mess for someone else to clean up. What a leader. He hid for 24 hours after 9/11 and he's hiding now. Keep kicking ass, Marine.
That Webb dismisses the president... is newsworthy?
I don't think anyone listens to Jim Webb. He's basically the guy the democrats and their pet media pushed after destroying George Allen's career through his utterance of the obscure word mucaca. And now this guy is a Senator.
quit playing politics
Mr Webb should be ashamed of himself. If it wasn't an election year he would be not be as vocal. He is supporting Mrs. Clinton by bashing the President. It's shameful. This man is a local heavy-weight but on the national level he is an embarrassment and not going anywhere. I'm a Democrat, but not for long.
that's nice of him
Personally, I dismiss most of Webbs actions. Smarmy just isn't flattering for a senator. I wasn't the least surprised to hear that Bush's actions were too little too late, or inadequate or unacceptable. Politics can sure screw up an otherwise functional government.
Kabuki
Not "kabookey." I think Sen. Webb probably referred to "kabuki." Larry Johnson in Current Affairs (9/10/07) said Petreus and Crocker "will take center stage in today’s so-called drama, Iraq Kabuki. Kabuki is a type of popular Japanese drama 'in which elaborately costumed performers use stylized movements, dances, and songs in order to enact tragedies and comedies.'”
