NORFOLK

The City Council is set to vote tonight on whether to ban trucks from Hampton Boulevard and other city streets for certain hours of the day.

The ordinance, copies of which won’t be available until today, will be debated at 5:30 p.m. during the council’s work session on the 10th floor of City Hall, 810 Union St. It is scheduled for a vote during the 7 p.m. formal session, which would be the only time the public could comment on it.

Truck traffic has been a contentious issue, with residents on the city’s west side demanding relief and representatives of the port and trucking industries cautioning that restrictions could threaten the port’s viability.

A majority of the council agreed in a closed session two weeks ago to ban trucks from Hampton Boulevard from 4 p.m. until 6 a.m., though some members are calling for stronger action to stem the daily traffic jams.

This is just WRONG!

This is just like the old saying regarding 2 wolves and 1 sheep voting on what to have for dinner. The Norfolk City Council will vote for whatever they think will keep them in office, no matter who it hurts or screws over. My fellow citizens of Norfolk, please follow my lead and vote the current council OUT in the next election. Their only interests are those that benefit them directly. Think about it. If trucks have to take a longer route, who will pay the added expense? That's right. You and I. It will be in the form of higher prices for E V E R Y T H I N G we buy! Everything in your houses, save pets and yourselves, at some point has ridden on a truck to get to you! Vote the incumbents out or be taxed and self-interest-lawed to death!

It will help, But.....

i think they need to change the time from 3pm to 7am. A lot of the naval base traffic lets out at 3 and thats when the traffic backups start. Since they have eliminated the HOV lane, its even worse. Trucks and cars ride the left lane until the last minute, and force their way into the right lane causing more backups. And I have noticed a great increase in people whipping a illegal U-turn at Brambleton and Claremont to enter the tunnel. Really need some police monitoring there. Just my 2 cents!!!
