RICHMOND

The state Senate passed legislation today that would require computer manufacturers to recycle returned equipment.

In a vote of 37 to 3, the Senate passed HB344, which was sponsored by Del. Kenneth Plum, D-Fairfax.

The legislation requires manufacturers of more than 500 items of computer equipment to develop and implement a recovery plan for recycling and reusing equipment returned by a buyer in Virginia.

Sen. Patricia Ticer, D-Alexandria, who chairs the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Conservation and Natural Resources, said the legislation was recommended and approved by computer manufacturers.
