City Council to meet

The City Council is to meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Council Chambers at City Hall, 306 Cedar Road. The meeting will be broadcast live on WFOS-FM 88.7, telecast live on cable channel WCTV-48 and re-telecast later. The agenda, backup materials and minutes will be available at public libraries.

 

 

NORFOLK

Smoking ban is topic

The City Council will meet at 4 p.m. at City Hall to decide whether to ban smoking in restaurants. The meeting is to be held on the 10 th floor in the council's informal meeting room.

 

 

PORTSMOUTH

City Council to meet

The City Council is to meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall, 801 Crawford St.

 

 

SUFFOLK

Business group to meet

Downtown Business Association is to meet at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Bank of America building, 210 W. Washington St. The "Shop Suffolk" campaign will be the topic. Call (757) 539-1216.

City Council to see budget

The city's two-year budget - for fiscal years 2009 and 2010 - is to be introduced at a City Council meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall, 2401 Courthouse Drive.

Olympic torch to be lit

The flame-lighting ceremony for the Beijing Olympics is to be held at the birthplace of the Olympic Games – Ancient Olympia, Greece. The flame is to be lit beside the 2,600-year-old Temple of Hera. It will later journey to Beijing.

 

 

TUESDAY

High court to hear cases

The Supreme Court is to hear arguments. In one case, two U.S. citizens held by the military in Iraq want access to U.S. courts to try to keep from being handed over to Iraqi authorities.

 

 

WEDNESDAY

Endeavour set to return

Space shuttle Endeavour is expected to land back on Earth after a 16-day mission to the international space station.

 

 

THURSDAY

Bush to speak on terrorism

President Bush is to discuss the fight against terrorism in a speech at the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton, Ohio.

 

 

FRIDAY

Vegas movie to open locally

“21,” a movie about counting cards in Las Vegas, opens in local theaters. It stars Kevin Spacey, Kate Bosworth and Laurence Fishburne.
