VIRGINIA BEACH

The gunman who killed two people and injured three others in a shooting at an apartment complex last month died from a self-inflicted gunshot to the head, according to autopsy results.

William T. Smith, 52, opened fire on workers at Thalia Gardens on March 19 when they came to do an inspection at the unit where he was living.

Smith shot the workers with an AK-47 assault rifle and a MAC 10 9 mm handgun, police said. He killed Rebecca Hughes, 32, and Sam Shestul, 63, both maintenance workers.

Police had said Smith apparently killed himself after shooting the workers, and the autopsy confirmed his death was suicide, said Donna Price, administrator for the state m edical e xaminer's office.

A search of the apartment revealed Smith had another gun and lots of ammunition. Police have not said where Smith got the guns or whether he possessed them legally.

Smith was living in a unit rented by his mother. Her lease was due to expire March 31, and the property management company, S.L. Nusbaum Realty Co., was not renewing it because of noise complaints.

On the day of the shooting, Smith's mother called from New York to give complex officials permission to inspect the unit so she could get her deposit back, Nusbaum officials have said.
