Man dies this morning after crashing vehicle in Virginia Beach

Posted to: News Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH

A man died after crashing a car near Lynnhaven Mall early this morning, Virginia Beach police said.

He was speeding at 1:49 a.m. in the 3300 block of Bow Creek Boulevard when the 2007 Hyundai Sonata crossed the center line and hit a pole, said Wayne Gilbert, a police spokesman. The driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected. The car then rolled and hit a parked van in a driveway.

He was taken to Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital, where he died, Gilbert said.

Police identified the man later Thursday morning as 20-year-old Demetries D. Collins of the 4200 block of Buckeye Court.

The crash remains under investigation.

I'd like to personally thank Deuce22, Sam & Kathy for your condolences. i am a cousin in the Washington DC are who will be in Virginia Beach this weekend for his Homegoing Services. I honestly said a prayer for all others who've judged and assumed the worse. Wow, haven't we all been taught that judging is so wrong? I guess not. Don't get me wrong speeding is a crime which I do not condone ... it's the other statements I prayed about. The last time I checked there was only 1 perfect being!

Just a little consideration

Another person has lost their life and we still show no sympathy for the person and his family. This ridiculous! If this happened to you and your family how would you feel? Regardless of how he died or what he was doing...that was a young man who is now gone. As a human being several of the comments are very disturbing and in my opinion just nasty. If you have ever experienced tragedy the last thing you want is someone else demeaning the life of your love one...regardless. That was someones son, brother, uncle, cousin who is now gone. Please have a little more sympathy for people in their time of grievance.

R.I.P. D

Yes I think you people that are talking down on this guy, are just sick excuses for people. How are you going to talk down on someone who just lost there life, no matter how it happened. I understand that yall are just voicing your opinions. But right after he dies. COME ON!!!
I just happen to be one of Dee's friends. and just think yall should be more considerate.

Thank you

Inappropriate?

I live about a mile from this accident scene. People generally obey the 25 MPH speed limit, even in the wee hours of the morning. It IS a residential street but some view it as a shortcut to somewhere else and speed along it. If somebody sped and died along it, it was their own fault (even if drugs or alcohol weren't involved). Yes, feel bad for the families involved, but not so much for the person who sped themselves to the grave. This, like so many others, was a preventable 'accident'.

For the record: There are no "accident's". Only people making stupid decisions that affect their's, and others, lives. I refuse to feel sorry for them, only their victims.

20-yr old Dies??? Family sympathy???

I have a comment for cathyb, If the parents were possibly more involved in his life. Knew what he was doing, who his friends are, things of that nature. Then he might still be alive. I am sorry but, I was apart of NHRA, and any given weekend we could pay 100$ and go drag race down a quarter mile. As FAST as WE want. I see way to many people now is such A rush anymore. Trying to drive while drinking coffee, talking on the phone, smoking, changing stations on the radio. If you want to speed or anything else but drive for that fact. DO IT SOME WHERE ELSE. NOT ON THE ROAD. I work as a contractor, and have a 6x12 trailer behind my truck. I drive to and from norfolk from the beach everyday. I can't even begin to tell you how many time I have been cut off, (by the way when I am driving 65mph and you get right in front of me and hit the brakes. How fast do you think I can stop the truck??? Now put an EXTRA 2000lbs behind it??? To Late I am in your @ss... And who gets the ticket?????? ME, following to closely...) So no I do not show sympathy for people who act sooo stupid, and have no common sense. I feel bad for the people who are affected by the persons actions.

I saw the aftermath

I was driving to work on bow creek around 5 this morning and saw the car. It looked terrible. I agree there must have been more then just speed. The road is pretty wide, not narrow at all. My thought and prayers go out to the family. All I know is, I would of hated to have lived where it happen. Waking up to that scene!!!! WAS NOT PRETTY!!!!

how inappropriate

What an inappropriate comment to make to the mother, father, friends, and loved ones of this young boy who has just lost his life. Next time you should keep your thoughts and opinions to yourself.

Agreed...definitely not just speeding...

Granted there's a bend right there on that block and neighbors park their cars on the street. But you'd have to be driving so unconscionably to lose control of your like that on a road like that. Thank goodness they didn't plow straight into someone's home!

He Wasn't Speeding . . .

He was flying! That road only has a 25 MPH speed limit. To hit a pole, roll and then hit a parked car is driving at a VERY high rate of speed. I bet alcohol or drugs were also involved.
