Preservation group cites proposed Navy landing field as threat

Posted to: Military

A historic preservation group's annual list of the state's most endangered sites names a proposed Navy landing field as a threat to local history in four counties.

In a news release, APVA Preservation Virginia said it creates the list to raise awareness of historical resources and give communities a tool to build support for preserving them.

The group said the proposed outlying landing field "could impact multiple historic sites and landscapes in Southampton, Surry, Sussex, and Prince George counties. Potential threats include degradation of historic structures by excessive vibration, noise pollution, and the loss of thousands of acres of rural landscape."

The Navy is studying three sites in Virginia and two in North Carolina. If a Virginia site is chosen, APVA Preservation Virginia said it will press the Navy to protect historic properties and landscapes.

Any site or community that wishes to host this OLF

I will support. There was a movement around Havelock that would have potentially wanted this OLF. The Navy insisted that they did not want to fly down there. They do not want an OLF supporting Cherry Point, why? easier to move them away from Oceana at next BRAC.

For 5 years, the Navy said an OLF was not required. The Navy is now saying it is required, but provided no quantitative data to support their claim. The ONLY document that shows quantitative data is the FEIS which is a valid document as it was utilized to homebase 8 squadrons + training squadron at Oceana.

No community should have to accept this OLF if they do not wish to host it. Fentress and Oceana need to be fixed first. That is were the problem is, not these new OLF sites.

APVA sites OLF as threat

When the APVA listed the Virginia sites as threatened by the potential OLF they are doing their job of preserving Virginia's historic treasures. If certain locations on the Navy's list of sites are choosen, historic properties could be lost that can never be replaced. The law requires the Navy to do an environmental impact study to make sure the Navy does not make an avoidable error including their impact on historic properties. Opposition is part of the process and I believe helps in the decision making process. People should bring issues to the attention of the Navy or any other government agency that threatons their health, property or the environment. There are governments that do not allow opposition. It's doubtful that any American would realy want that.

OLF

Maybe "eminent domain" should go into effect for all the homes in Virginia Beach surrounding Oceana and in Chesapeake at Fentress. I have a hard time stomaching the fact that the beautiful and historic "country" must pay the price for Chesapeake's and Virginia Beach's greed.

I have a site for you

Fentress. Tear down all the houses that have encroached. We have to take away someone's property, may as be the ones who screwed it up in the first place, not the rural farmers who has been good stewards of the land.

Freedom

Under the suggestion that Eminent Domain be used, the "sound of freedom" is a misnomer isn't it? Wouldn't really be the "sound of do what we want or we will take your stuff cuz' we are the goverment."

Regardless, if NC is chosen, my attorney is ready. He's a mean SOB too.

No OLF

I chose to live in Southampton county and drive to work in Norfolk every day because I enjoy country living. To have my peace and quiet shattered by jets doing touch and go landings would be an affront. If I wanted to listen to them I would have bought a house in the flight path as so many other people have done in Virginia Beach. I know that they need to be able to practice their landings, but there has to be some other way that this issue can be resolved. Maybe the BRAC had it right when they said that Oceana needed to be moved.

VB needs to condemn encrouchment

The government needs to enforce the Navy's order for Virginia Beach to condemn the areas around the base. If Virginia Beach doesn't, then the base should be closed and moved elsewhere in another state. We are all citizens of the U.S. and equal. So, VB, do what you were ordered to do!

OK. Where IS an approved site for an OLF?

These opposition groups seem to say that ANY proposed site is unacceptable. Perhaps the Navy should take the position that these groups have one year to agree to a site that will work as an OLF. If these groups can't agree on a workable site, the government should pick a site, condemn it, through the power of eminent domain, and build the OLF without further consideration or discussion.
