Police no longer are investigating the March shooting of high school football star Kevin Whaley outside a club. A lack of leads and cooperation from Whaley spurred the decision to consider the case inactive, police said.

A two-time All-Tidewater Player of the Year, Whaley signed a scholarship in February to play football at the University of Minnesota.

"Based on the limited information we were given by the victim, investigators have exhausted the avenues they have," said Adam Bernstein, police spokesman.

Whaley, 19, the all-time leading rusher in South Hampton Roads, was shot in the leg outside Tri Som Caribbean Restaurant on South Plaza Trail around 2 a.m. on March 21. Police have said they think Whaley and the shooter might have had some sort of conflict inside the club before the shooting and that they didn't think it was a random drive-by.

In an interview a week after the shooting, Whaley said he wasn't involved in any incident that preceded the shooting.
