Myrtle Beach won't pull tourism ad dissing Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH

The sandstorm between the Beaches is apparently just fine with Myrtle Beach.

Tourism officials there defended a marketing campaign Thursday that disses Virginia Beach.

In fact, the ads have run sporadically for two years and also name Daytona Beach and Gatlinburg, Tenn.

"Frankly, my top priorities right now are filling hotel rooms," Brad Dean, head of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, told The (Myrtle Beach) Sun News. "It's pure guerilla marketing, and some take issue with that."

"Some" includes Virginia Beach tourism gurus.

They noticed an official Myrtle Beach chamber Web page recently that called the resort "The Ideal Alternative to Virginia Beach Vacations." The ad touted more relaxation or thrills - depending on one's tastes - and better prices.

Jim Ricketts, head of the Virginia Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau, wrote a letter castigating his counterparts and asking that the ad be pulled.

Hasn't happened yet.

"All's fair in love and war," Myrtle Beach Mayor John Rhodes told The Sun News. "I personally think Virginia Beach is making a mountain of a molehill, and the more disgruntled they become the more publicity they give Myrtle Beach."

Re MMM

I was also amused. Stevenc..Please don't take it the wrong way. I liked the comment, & got a good laugh. Thanks from me too.

Let them have the beach title!

Virginia Beach has more to offer than just the beach! MB is just a glorified beach and nothing more than a tourist attraction. Virginia Beach should counter their ads with ones proclaiming that "MB is the place where tourists visit but VB is the place where tourists live"! There are a few up here that can't be pleased regardless of what the city does but for the rest of us, VB is part of a greater, more dynamic region than MB will ever be. Perhaps some of the disgruntled VB residents could move there if they don't like the idea of living in a REAL city!

Now that's a funny comment! Thanks!

Mmm

Interesting title. Did anyone see the headline in the Myrtle Beach Paper today.

"Myrtle Beach Threatens Capping Virginia Beach's Punk Ass in Dispute Over Tourism Ads."

Slang Can...& Does Evolve Into English Language

"Yan·kee
–noun 1. a native or inhabitant of the United States."...2. 3. 4. Northern regions etc etc..

This is just 1 example..Words that were once used as slang have evolved into what is commonly spoken even today in America. After all, many were "invented" by the "English". There must be hundreds...or more.. in nautical terms & phrases alone. One of the first written uses of this word to refer to an American can be found in a letter to Lord Nelson.
There are more definitions of this word, but, there is one from this source that was omitted. Although first used with contempt...It is the proud name of one of the US's most successful baseball teams.

Don't Like Either

Myrtle Beach is as bad as VB. They both hassle everyone to bleed them dry of their funds. Only time I go to the Oceanfront is when company comes into town. Glad that isn't too often. The Oceanfront use to be lots of fun to be had bad all. You could play ball games and whatever you wanted to. Now they have DO's and DON'Ts with more DON'Ts than do's. Both are very commericalized, but as many as said about the oceanfront, that after the sun goes down there is NOTHING TO DO. Remember when Dolly Parton was tyring to bring in an entertainment facility, which the city shot down. Now the city wants to put some large amusement complex in which is what Dolly was going to do. Yes, MB has lots of other things to do, but once again it is as bad as VB. Even the Outer Banks where I loved to go for a week at a time is now getting like VB. All they are doing is building places to sell tourist items. I seen the change there in 20 years and it is now another VB.

Myrtle Beach Is Just Telling The Truth

I've lived in Virginia Beach since '91 and the more power they gave the Christian Right, the less of a nice place to visit the beach has became. Between the constant censorship, the zero tolerance the beach police have for nice cars and the constant deafening roar of the jets from Oceana, it's a wonder anyone comes here to vacation in the first place. That's ok with me - the sooner the tourists go home, the better.

Come on, People!

Aren't you getting just a little out of hand with "dissing" the Pilot and its use of a commonly used word? If you read blogs on other subjects regarding the Beach, many seem upset by the rules and regulations governing behavior, saying Va. Beach is way too conservative for anyone to enjoy. Then the local paper makes an attempt to lighten things up a bit with common vernacular and you would think they misspelled the President's name or something, heaven forbid!

Thanks for the comedy Pilot!

Virginia Beach cannot handle the truth

I have vactioned in both Virginia Beach and Myrtle Beach. The add is right on. Myrtle has so much more to offer EVERYONE, from families to guys going on a golfing weekend. They have shows such as Dixie Stampede and Alabama. They have 100's of golf an putting courses. Most of the hotels have indoor, outdoor AND floating pools. MOST of all they are friendly to people and the police do not look for reason to hassle tourists.
