A fire aboard the carrier George Washington Thursday morning injured 24 sailors, but no serious injuries were reported, the Navy said today.

One sailor was treated for first-degree burns and the others were treated for heat stress, according to a Navy news release.

The crew was at general quarters, a high alert, for 12 hours, the release says.

The ship, on its way to its new homeport in Yokosuka, Japan, was conducting a routine replenishment operation in the Pacific Ocean when the fire began, the Navy said.

The fire was located in the area of an aft air conditioning and refrigeration space and a boiler room and spread to several spaces along a cableway, the Navy said today.

The blaze did not damage the ship's nuclear propulsion plant, the Navy said. The ship is continuing, with full propulsion capability, to San Diego before relieving the Kitty Hawk in the Western Pacific.

Sailors fought the blaze for several hours, the Navy said in the release. The cause is under investigation.

The carrier was homeported in Norfolk until April, when it left for Japan.
