Del. Spruill to attend Clinton's speech tonight in New York

Posted to: Chesapeake News

Del. Lionell Spruill Sr., D-Chesapeake, is on his way to New York to attend U.S. Sen. Hillary’s Clinton’s speech tonight.

Spruill, a Virginia superdelegate who has remained steadfastly loyal to Clinton, said he was invited by the campaign - with all expenses paid.

“You can’t turn that down,” Spruill said.

The party's last presidential primaries are being held today in South Dakota and Montana. Spruill said he is not expecting Clinton to drop out of the campaign tonight and said he has been told she will remain a candidate until she is convinced that U.S. Sen. Barack Obama has enough national delegates to cinch the Democratic nomination.

Spruill said Clinton won his devotion last year when she arranged a private meeting with him in Northern Virginia and asked for his support.

“She was the only candidate who personally asked me to support her,” he said. “She didn’t take me for granted.”

Spruill said he does not expect Clinton to linger in the race if it becomes clear Obama has the nomination wrapped up. “If he gets the numbers and she persists on, it’s going to hurt us in November," he said.

“But I’m still hanging in there with her tonight,” he said.

Also today, Susan Swecker, chairman of the state Alcoholic Beverage Control board and a longtime Democratic activist, said she is sticking with Clinton but does not expect her to remain in the race much longer.

“It is apparent that Sen. Obama will be the nominee and from the moment that occurs, I will do everything I can to support him,” she said.

Richard Cranwell, the chairman of the state Democratic Party, said if Obama becomes the only candidate before the state party convention is concluded on June 14, he would have no problem supporting him.

Obama's campaign announced today that the candidate will visit Virginia in Thursday.  He will visit a high school in Bristol in southwestern Virginia, and will hold a rally at the Nissan Pavillion in Bristow in northern Virginia.

As a Dem I will be voting McCain

Last night my family and freinds discussed this at great length and we will all be voting for McCain. As much as we dislike McCain we dislike Obama even more. Obama will not be able to unite this country, and he is not the best choice, but the talking heads of the news media got Obama the nomination. The entire event has been discusting.
For those that voted for Obama in the primary, I hope you are satisfied.

Obama's potential US Presidency

As a white farm-boy-raised Republican and combat veteran I must say that having Obama as a US Presidential candidate makes me feel very proud to be an American. John McCain is a good man, of course. But, it's no secret that he traded his maverick principles for a candidacy, all the while forgetting those promises he'd made to us during his 2000 run. Now, Obama will take us through those first steps needed to regain our country's once-famous "soft power," its economy and world respect - all of which have been squandered these past seven years. Man o man. These times, right now, are to me the most exceptional ever in US politics and history; the world is watching; our future as an unencumbered republic is at stake. (Which, of course, is one more great reason why so many retired US Generals have broken with recent tradition and are now siding with Obama and not the GOP candidate.)

RE:take it all the way

Democrats are no more divided than the Republicans are by a long shot.

Take it all the way till November

The longer Hillary stay's in the race the longer the Democrates remain divided. This is working great for the Republican's. Keep going Hillary!

Way to go, Spruill!

I'm so proud that you have stuck with Clinton through all of this. I'm with you!

He needs to stay home and save the jet fuel...

after all isn't he a memeber of the tree hugger party....what possibly could he contribute by going to NYC....I wonder who is paying the bill?

Spruill hanging in there

Spruill is still hanging in there for Clinton and so am I. I really think Clinton should take this all the way to the convention. A lot has happend in this campaign even since VA. I cannot see Obama as president of the U.S., not at all.
