Trial date set for man accused of killing Chesapeake detective

I also wish everyone would do the same....shut up and wait for the trial. Stop with all this "cover up" and "conspiracy" crap. Until anyone of you are actually personally involved in the case (lawyer, judge, police, defendant, etc...) then you will never know the facts. Believe all you want to believe from the paper and the news. Doing so shows just what type of person you are and what a narrow mind you have. Also, some of you may find it useful to attend a firearms/CCW training class. There you will learn the laws concerning your firearm and when it is legal to use it. Reading some of these comments...alot of you sure could use it, before you find yourself in the same cell as Ryan.

Keep your heads up! There are many out there that support you and thank you for the job that you are doing...even though you may not see it in many of these posts. I have full confidence that all of the "questions" that are being posted here and in the media, will be answered in a court of law. I'm sure that the defense attorney will undoubtedly bring all of these "theories" in to the court room - so, I'm confident there will be answers. Thank you for protecting our city and EVERYONE in it! (whether they like it or not!)

The small number of people who are concocting conspiracy theories and trying to defend what Frederick did are simply kidding themselves.

Frederick is going to jail. The only issue to be resolved is for how long. That will be based on the facts and circumstances, as presented in court. Wishful thinking will not be a factor.

Despite your fantasy of public outrage, the vast majority of people in this community support the police. There is no defense for what Frederick did.

After reading most of these comments only one or two people make sense. The trial date is set and agreed upon the Ryan's attorney too. See what most of you do not realize this is real life and cases do not get tried in 45 minutes.
As for the WTKR report of the CPD patching up a hole in the house. Funny, who let the police back in the house after they left from the search warrant? I have read "we have before and after photos of the alleged .223 hole". Really, if you have them show them. Funny the station WTKR recently had a major house cleaning after they reproted the story. Not one of you claimed "cover up or fabricated story by WTKR". Wait for the trial and let each side do their job.

This whole situation ia terrible. What is the CPD hiding? Alot, I'm sure!

He was doing the same thing that I do with my loaded, at the ready weapon in my own home. Defending it. Don't you really think that even if he did hear them announce themselves, which by the way I don't think he did, what would a home invasion team announce to push their way in. They would claim to be the police. Det. Shivers death was a total waste, just as the raid on Mr. Fredericks house was. If it wasn't so serious it would be called a comedy of errors, keystone cops style with boots! I can hardly wait to hear why they decided to perform this entry the way they did. Mr. Fredericks stay strong and don't give up the fight. No one wants to be the victim of the next attack on their home by the police department on the word of a confidential informant.

Let's not forget the bullet hole that the CPD tried covering up in the wall of Fredericks house. I'd say CPD is pretty well busted, not just covering up and evidence tampering but many other discrepancies. Like failing to investigate properly and taking the word of a known criminal to make a raid on an innocent citizens home. The "informant" should be arrested for breaking and entering. It's already known that the "growing operation" was Japanese Maple trees (Great investigation) did CPD swap them out with Pot plants? Detectives failed to investigate the claim properly. The magistrate failed to verify there was enough evidence to support the warrant. The CPD Chief failed to properly train his officers in how to safely execute a warrant. The division head failed to check to see if there was a more opportune time and place to SAFELY serve the warrant. There are many people that should be in jail or charged for this terrible incident. Fredericks IS NOT one of them. He should be out on bail at the very least. If he's not because he allegedly shot a cop, then why wasn't the cop that shot the Norfolk cop held.

I don't care how long they drag it out. You have support in this community and we won't forget about you.

I could possibly see six months to trial from date of arrest, but until January? Once again it is nothing more than a delay tactic by the prosecutor in hopes he will break Ryan into some sort of plea so it will save the CPD and the city from a protracted battle. Sorry...it is not as easy as putting putty into a hole to cover it up...when faced with a formidable, experienced defense attorney. It appears that by extending the time they are hoping it will somehow cause all this controversy to die out and go away.

Trial dates are set up by the courts for future dates. It is very naive to think that a trial date can be set up for only a few months in advance. Trials are set according to what is already on the docket, not according to how 'important' the trial may be. My court reporting firm has trials already on our books for February 2009 and they've been set for those dates for weeks. This is not unusual and certainly no reason to jump to any conclusion that there is an alterior motive in setting up a date that far in advance.

The reason the trial is far away is so that his supporters will slowly forget about it. Its always easier to falsify facts when citizens have cooled down and forgoten about his terrible situation. Nobody will be there to hold the city accountable for it. I bet there will be a small article in the pilot about it in the back. He who controls the media controls the mind. I'll be at the courthouse protesting. Revolution is our only option. See the consequences of the patriot act?

His trial starts January 20, 2009.

Alleged. The pilot has already tried him as evidenced with this slanted article. Why are they CPD saying pot manufacturing? I thought it was a small amount found in the house. Good Luck to Ryan, may Justice be served swiftly.

It is a real shame that this poor boy has to go through this. Of course it's going to take CPD that long to make up their story & get everyone to memorize it. I can only hope & pray that he is found NOT GUILTY. But it is a good question- why is it that police can shoot a citizen & it's always "justified"?? I think Nancy Grace should get in on this- let the whole country see how CPD really are.

We've heard; crawling through door, standing in yard and standing on porch. It would be nice if CPD would get at least part of their story straight. A question though. Maybe someone knows. Why is it that when the NPD officer shot the NPD detective, the officer was not held in jail until his hearing? Yet, when a private citizen, whose home was being invaded by an unknown intruder, the citizen is held without bond? Just one of the questions that came to my mind. There is no excuse for this entire incident and there's no reason why Fredericks should be held without bond on trumped up charges.

I said it before, I hope this is picked up by court tv. Then all those posting here who are genuinely interested can watch live or TiVo the trial so we can review the evidence for ourselves. No more speculation or name calling. We may even get to see the evidence the jury doesn't (excluded by motions from either side) like we did in the OJ trial. BTW, the police have nothing to do with setting or delaying the trial dates. That is strictly up to the court, the CWA and defense attorney(s). If CPD was "manufacturing" a case, do you really think they would have inventoried the now infamous .223 casing (not a bullet) or do you think they would simply have pocketed it and said nothing? Um, Uh, maybe they have nothing to cover up?

If he's acquitted, this will be a real shame. On the other hand, if he's found guilty of only involuntary manslaughter, maybe they'd give him a year, with credit for time spent and he'd be out after the trial. If he's found guilty of capital murder, it's not going to make a difference.

In 1981 I was taught in H.S. U.S. Gov't Class:
1. Innocent until proven guilty
2. Right to a fair and speedy trial

Flash forward to 2008:
1. Guilty until proven innocent
2. Right to an unfair and slow trial.

Why in the world has this taken so long? CPD must have to manufacture their case. I guess the right to a speedy trial is to much to ask. There I go thinking out loud again.
