PORTSMOUTH

A Portsmouth father left his 2-year-old in the car where he died of heat-related causes last week, according to a preliminary investigation by police. No charges have been filed at this time.

The father, Andrew W. Culpepper, 40, was bringing his son home from a relative’s house, according to a statement from Portsmouth police. He left the toddler, Andrew Stephen Culpepper, in the vehicle while he entered the house, on Tyler Crescent East.

The investigation is ongoing.

Police earlier said the boy was found unresponsive in the car, in the Glensheallah neighborhood near the Willett Hall auditorium. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to an obituary submitted Saturday to The Virginian-Pilot, Culpepper's funeral was set for today at Meadowbrook Memorial Mausoleum.
