NORFOLK
An inmate in the Norfolk jail hanged himself with a bedsheet Tuesday afternoon, a spokeswoman for the sheriff said.
The suicide was reported at 5:16 p.m., said Bonita Harris, the spokeswoman.
The inmate was 51 years old and had been in the jail since July Fourth. He was alone in a single cell, Harris said. His name was not immediately released.
Norfolk police are investigating the death, and the sheriff’s office will do an internal investigation, Harris said.
The last inmate suicide in the jail happened in June 2007.
