PORTSMOUTH
The boarded-up brick buildings at the former Jeffry Wilson housing complex could one day be replaced with sidewalks, a park, townhouses and small shops.
Those are some of the ideas that representatives from Urban Design Associates presented to former Jeffry Wilson residents and homeowners and business owners from the nearby Mount Hermon, Westhaven and Midtown communities Wednesday.
The designers are in Portsmouth this week to meet with stakeholders and develop design guidelines for redevelopment of the high-profile site. They plan to present their findings at a public meeting tonight.
Portsmouth is redeveloping the site with a $20 million federal Hope VI grant.
Located at the intersection of Frederick Boulevard and Turnpike Road, the area is across the street from the former location of I.C. Norcom High School, where a new shopping center is being developed.
After some environmental abatement like asbestos removal, demolition of the buildings on the Jeffry Wilson site is planned for October, said Kathy Warren, director of development for the Portsmouth Redevelopment and Housing Authority.
About 400 families who lived in the community will get first choice on the units once they are built, she said.
