The murder trial for Wesley Earnest, the former assistant principal at Great Bridge High School, has been continued.

Earnest, 38, was scheduled to stand trial today in Bedford County Circuit Court for the December 2007 murder of his estranged wife. Earnest, who was freed on bond in May, is expected to return to court Oct. 3 for a pre-trial hearing and motions, according to court records.

He faces charges of murder and use of a firearm in the commission of the crime. Earnest’s estranged wife, Jocelyn, was found dead Dec. 20 at her home in Forest. She had been shot in the back of the head, and a typed note next to her body implied suicide. A co-worker found her body.

Jocelyn Earnest had filed for divorce in 2006 after 11 years of marriage, but the divorce was never finalized. During the homicide investigation, Wesley Earnest was working at the school in Chesapeake. He took a leave from work in January.
