VIRGINIA BEACH
A 54-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with what police described as a murder-for-hire plot targeting a city detective.
Edmund A. Kutauskas, of the 400 block of 24th St., was in the Virginia Beach Correctional Center without bond Thursday on charges of solicitation for murder and conspiracy to commit murder, police spokesman Adam Bernstein said.
Police received information, Bernstein said, that Kutauskas had contacted a person in New York to arrange the killing of a Virginia Beach detective. The detective had arrested Kutauskas in July on a grand larceny charge, the spokesman said.
The plot that police say Kutauskas planned is not related to another suspected murder-for-hire plot targeting two Virginia Beach detectives. In that case, which police announced last month, an inmate at the city's jail allegedly tried to hire another man and his girlfriend to kill the detectives.
Investigators charged Ronald Mayfield Jr., 27, of Norfolk, and Alexander D. Morris, 31, and Vernita Johnson, 25, both of Virginia Beach, on charges of solicitation for murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
